So My car has been sitting in the garage for the winter. I didnt have a battery maintainer on. I just left the battery unplugged. Battery was dead, tried charging it, wouldnt hold a charge. So I used another battery that seemed to have had 50 percent charge. I plugged it in, the lights came on, but wouldnt turn the car over. I figured I would jump it and it should do the trick. After hooking up three different jump packs at once I finally got it started. I was relieved.....Now it was time to go for a ride. I pulled out of the garage just fine. Started driving a bit in the driveway and heard from noise from the rear left, as if something as catching the tire. It got louder and louder. It got to the point where you could hear it down the street. Obviously the noise was only there when the car moved, either forward or backwards. It sounds like some internal gears are being grinded into metal shavings. Consequently the ediff light goes on, and then off and back on. The check engine light came on for a minute or two and went off. I made it back into my garage, went and bought a brand new battery and installed it. I figured oh its probably just because of the battery. Maybe it was just because of the battery, but now even though i installed the new battery its the same noise if not worse. Im just hoping I didnt screw up the ediff internally. So I honestly have no idea whats going on. If anyone has run into anything like this please help me out. I really hope I can get this back on the road without a visit to the dealer.

    Dan

    Thanks in advance.

Ebrake caliber would be my guess as well. That would throw the diff into a tizzy as well.

I once made the mistake of setting my parking brake in the garage. Wouldn't move in reverse until it made horrible noises and jumped. The brake pads stick to the rotors. Now I just leave it in first gear and no parking brake -- plus I don't get that beeping noise.

I thought it might have been the ebrake as well. But I noticed the noise gets worse when making turns. I'm going to make a video and post it up. You can literally hear the noise down the street.

Can you push the car forward or back when in neutral?

Yeah. At one point I was afraid to keep driving it, so I put it into neutral, and just pushed it with my friend. It still made the same noise even in neutral.

My car made a similar noise (07 F430) - grinding sound out of the rear differential and would get louder when turning sharp in a cul de sac and would go away after about a mile or so. Took it to my shop and they changed out the differential fluid and problem never came back. He told me this is common when cars sit for a while.

Wow, just because of the diff fluid?

Ha ha this reminds me of a hilarious story from when I was young and stupid (now I am just old and stupid). :)

I had to replace the third member (differential) for some reason in my Toyota Corolla during my college days. I yanked one out of a similar car at Pick n Pull (thank goodness I purchased the warranty), threw it in my car, then took off down the freeway. One slight goof: I forgot to put the gear oil back in.
So I'm flying down the freeway when I thought I heard a funny noise coming out of the rear end. I hear a click. Then a click, then a louder click, then a thunk, then a louder thunk, then a chunk, and then (at 70 MPH) the rear end instantly and completely locks up! So now I am sliding down the freeway, thinking WTF??????????
So I yank that one out, bring it back to Pick n Pull, tell them I don't like that one, yank another one out, put the gear oil back in this time, works perfect.
    :D

I have a similar grinding noise but coming from the front wheel well and only when going in reverse slowly and the wheel slightly turned. If i pick up in speed the sound disappears.

Any thoughts on what is the cause?

    Thank you.
