Yesterday I checked the engine oil level on my F430. It has now 2500km (abt. 1560 miles). I had to top up the engine oil by 1 liter. The oil level was just above the lower point. I am using ofcourse synthetic Shell Helix. I know that synthetic oils tend to evaporate, but is this oil consumption rate normal for a F430 engine?

Tarek, I can't comment on my 05 F-430's first 1200 miles (before my ownership) but the next 2000 miles, checking after normal temperature (owners manual procedures), mine did not use any oil.

Thanks DJS....I know that new engines could use some oil in their first kilometers and consumption becomes less with time....I just want to make sure that the above is within reason.

I had the same thing happen. After 1600 miles it had to be toped off with 1 liter of oil. I was concerned because my 360"s never used any oil. Talked with service manager at FNE (I"ve known for years, gives me strait talk) he says 430"s use about that amount every 1500 or so.

Thanks Rick......that is comforting. I guess oil usage also depends on the driving style. The last couple of months I was pushing my F430 really hard on many occasions, reaching high revs....I guess that also adds to the engine using some oil.

My 360 uses 1 liter every 500-700 miles as indicated in the manual and verified by my actual experience. The 430 is probably similar or slighly better.

Wow, my wife's 360 has used about 1/2L in 3000 miles and my 430 about the same in 1500.

Michael......I guess it's also related to the driving style........ofcourse the harder you drive the car, the more engine oil it would consume. Your wife might be very easy on the car....not tracking it and not always revving the engine to max during her driving......that will keep oil usage to a minimum.

I've put 9K on my 430 and never had to add any oil, even after track events. Of course, I did break it in according to factory recommendations. I know that failure to do so with other marques can lead to oil consumption. Ferraris?

I cant believe you guys drive such expensive cars and spend peanuts on motor oil.
FYI Shell Helix is NOT fully synthetic. Its partially synthetic.

If you can afford $250 K cars, you can afford quality engine oils that ARE 100% synthetic (good enough for air plane jet motors) and ester based.

If your going to drive the best cars, use the best oils, Redline and Motul.

The car should not consume oil... if it does there is a problem...

It seems that the general opinion from the above posts is that the 360/F430 engines do consume some oil.

Some cars actually do use oil. I have a V8 LR Discovery which as well consumes 1/2 ltr. to 1 ltr. of engine oil every 1000 miles and that is since it was brand new.

Tarek, you can order it online... try googling Redline or Motul oils for delivery. They work out cheaper that way anyway.
Your car deserves the best, Shell Helix is NOT one of the better oils out there, even Mobile is better.

    Good luck.

Most owners use the oil specified in the F430 owners manual, which is Shell Helix. Hard to fault that thinking, IMO, even if it may not be the best oil on the market.

That's because Ferrari have a contract with Shell, purely financial.

If it means keeping the warranty, stick to Shell, then once its finished switch to ester based oils.

The Formula 1 division has a contract with Shell. Most car manufacturers recommend Mobil 1.
I guess you should always use what the manufacturer recommends. This will not void your waranty and the engineers know what is best for the car.

On a side note....all my cars consume oil. The Cayenne Turbo went through 1 litre in 6000 km's and the 997 Turbo burnt about 1,5 litres in 3000 km's.
Some of the oil is used for lubricating the turbos and the rest I believe gets burnt through the engine.

Oil consumption usually gets less the higher the mileage on the car.

I believe, that when the engine consumes oil in the beginning, its breaking in correctly.....
