Was looking at an '09 coupe today. Was surprised to learn that at 3k miles it had over 21% clutch wear. Abuse???

Possibly. I have an 07 coupe with 15% wear. At least it's not 21% remaining.

It doesn't necessarily mean abuse. It could mean a lot of city driving. It's a lot though but if he's creeping along all the time, then you can get a lot of wear. Or, he may have to go up a lot of hills or up a long driveway.

What is more telling is the "overheat" time. Did they give you that information?

Personally, I don't think so. But, the easiest way to find that out is to look at the brakes. If the brakes are heavily worn, then you can bet track time. If the brakes are still almost new, then it's most likely slipping the clutch in traffic.

If the brakes were replaced in 3k miles, almost for sure it was tracked.

Again, the overheat time would give you an indication if it's from hard driving or just city driving.

Wear is a bit high, but not outrageous. I wouldn't let 21% wear alone scare me off. I was told clutch wear reading (SD3) is not all that accurate anyways. Also, stop-go and inclines supposedly a lot tougher on the clutch than track use.

I would agree with this. Track use probably causes minimal wear on the clutch. The majority of clutch wear is in 1st gear from a stop or in reverse, especially up an incline. I have a slight incline and always back my car into the garage and that is hard on the clutch.
