I'm trying to get a better understanding of the F1 System in the F430, and I had a couple of questions I was hopeful someone (or someones) could chime in on regarding best practices, etc:

    (1) When paddle shifting up/down, should one let up on the gas, keep it stable, or give it more? Does one of these cause more or less wear on the clutch?

    (2) What is a good shift point; I've always tended to shift in the upper end of the band before red line to stay in the power band; however, a dealer recently told me that one should shift at 3-4k RPM -- and that would basically keep me out of the tones.

    (3) I was watching a review the other day and the driver was talking about never really having to use his brakes; instead, he would just down shift and engine brake ... even when approaching a traffic light. Is this something that is going to wear on the clutch?

    (4) Does a particular setting on the manettino wear more/less on the clutch?

Any other thoughts you might share on the F1 system would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA!

    Hi Bigjay,

    1) No need to let off the gas, either keep it where it is or foot to the floor for fastest shifts in race mode.

    2) less than 4k when oil and engine not up to temperature. When it is, change whenever you like, nothing like full throttle shift at 8500rpm :)

    3) You'll need to use the brakes, some people like me shift to N when coming to a stop at a light, clutch wear occurs most when taking off, reversing or changing gear, most when taking off and reversing but it's just convenient for me to go to N when coming to a stop.

    4) always drive in sport or race, snow/ice and wet weather on the manetino slip the clutch more than sport/race and does cause more wear.

    Hope that helps :)

    John.

That is a big help, thank you! What is average time to get engine and oil up to temp normally? Is there a guage/target?

If the oil temperature gauge is the same as the 360 then when the needle gets halfway between the stop and the first hash mark that is equivalent to 145 -- 150 degrees F which is what the manual recommends.

The warm up time will depend on the ambient temperature. Operating temp should be around 170-175F. For my normal city driving, I shift at 3-3,500. When accelerating, I personally lift off very slightly for a split second (curl your toes) for a smooth upshift.
Approaching a full stop, I put it into neutral as I would with my 6 speed manual and use the brakes rather than engine brake (a lot cheaper to replace brake pads than a tranny). Also being in neutral until you're ready to start for a standing stop saves wear on the throwout bearing. IMHO.
