Spoke to FOD (ferrari of Denver), after several weeks of having the engine disassembled. Basically needs either a complete rebuild or a crate/used engine. Can anyone chime in of where to look for a used one. Dealer is asking $30k for the engine plus labor. $48k for the jib. This is insane...advise please.

    Thanks

No specific diagnosis actually except that crankshaft is chewed up and metal went throughout. I had a tech fly out from California but without doing a complete tear down, we couldn't make a call wether to rebuild or? In Denver, there's really no independent shop that handle a 430. So it went to FOD to at least diagnose the problem.

After all said and done, the car needs a motor. So unexpected and had completely shattered my confidence in ferrari engineering. Come to find out, first series 430s are having major engine issues. Trying to source a used long block...

    Thanks for the leads all.

What were the symptoms before the failure?

I tend to think of 430 engines are pretty bulletproof...

I'm sorry to hear of your problems. I'm in the UK so can't help with sourcing a new block.

Could you give us some more details about your car? EG: How old/ how many miles? How often was it serviced? Did any of the headers fail?

It will be useful for the community to understand how the engine failed.

Good luck with getting back on the road.

Sounds like main crank bearing issues. Oil starvation? Contaminants in the oil?

A little more information about this would be nice. So that if there is something that could be prevented the community could consider ways to prevent it from happening to other cars.

Did you contact Dave Helms? Did he give you any feedback? Many trust his input rather implicitly.

I did try to get in touch with Dave, but he was out for a couple of weeks on vacation. Therefore it went to FOD. Will post pics shortly of the failures.

Dave is the best but does not have Sd3 equip. A big part of the reason I sold my 430. Didn't want to be captive to FoD.

Contact enginefxr ...He can give you reasonable and possibly less costly options. His rebuild would definitely be cheaper

Man...18 K to RR the engine is interesting to think about.

There must be a better place to get this done. I would talk to the GT or CS racing guys. If it took 120 hours to swap out an engine I cant imagine that the car could ever be used as a race car. That's three guys for an entire week (@ $150/hr each).

Wouldn't they have it out on the first day?

What model Year/Month car? Just curious. Be sure to document all of the failures in the engine with photos.

And you guys wonder why I so "tend to favor independents" in my posts. I presume that some of that is for the warranty. Looks to be about $30k asking for a used 430 engine. I can't see why the swap with direct parts from the OP car shouldn't be more than a day or two labor tops with the right equipment.

I also presume OP is limiting access to the VIN for resale. Shouldn't matter but can't say I blame him.

Ha, LS1 sighting. Had a ~700 hp LSx, pulled like a mother but didn't quite have the sound of the 430 lol.

To the OP, best of luck, hate to hear that...

I'm guessing (hoping) that this includes a fair bit of the engine disassembly and diagnosis?

I have thought about this scenario before and would be tempted to swap a new engine in and just take the broken one home and re-build it over time until it is "fresh" and then sell either one on the open market to re-coupe part of the cost. Document the bejeezus out of the process so that you dont scare the next owner.

I sympathize with the OP's situation for sure, but working in the service industry, I feel like I should add this. I doubt 18K was just labor, Im sure they factored in some "cushion" for taxes, fluids, misc items etc. and also, that appears to be about 100 or so hours of labor. With all the diag and disassembly time, and then R&R the engine, fuddle with missing parts, swapping parts over etc. then re-install test drive, verify the engine is good etc. 100 hours may not be as far fetched as one would think.
