Alright I know this is a long shot, as noises can be a million different things, but after 4 years of ownership this is a new one for me.

During the last couple of drives, about 50% of the time when sitting at a traffic light, my F430 makes this noise from the right-rear that I can only describe as a cat purring. It's very rhythmic, in a pulsing pattern about every 2 seconds or so. Not super loud, but loud enough for me to think... "hmmmm what's that." Wife hears it too so it's not just me being obsessive, LOL.

There are no other symptoms, everything works fine and no warning lights (thankfully). F1 system was serviced about 9 months ago -- gear potentiometers were replaced and has been running great ever since.

    Some other observations:
    1) Didn't do it when leaving home, seems to start after warmed up?
    2) Only hear it when sitting at red lights. If it happens while driving, you can't hear it over the road/engine noise
    3) Putting it in neutral at a traffic light didn't affect it whatsoever - noise continued the same
    4) Didn't do it arriving home (fully warmed up). Wanted to take a video before shutting it off but it sounded perfect, no weird noise whatsoever when idling in front of the garage.

Anyway, it doesn't seem like an immediate threat of anything and is hopefully fine, but just wanted to throw it out there in case anyone has experienced the same thing. Cheers everyone.

Are you sure it isn't your F1 pump .. do you have any diag tools - like ap200, thinkdiag, launch ?

I’m thinking F1 pump too, Dom.

I had an idea for the OP to try. When you’re stopped at a red light and hear the noise starting, pull into a parking lot, and have your wife sit in the drivers seat while you stand next to the right rear of the car. Have your wife put her foot on the brake and have her shift from 1-R-N-1. The F1 pump should run for a few seconds and stop after a few shifts. You won’t be able to raise the engine cover to listen because it won’t shift with that open, so you’ll have to listen closely near the upper part of the right rear fender.

Like flash suggested, a diagnostic tool would be the best, but if you don’t have one you can try this.

Thanks guys. I can't say for sure it's not the F1 pump responsible for the pulsing/purring noise, but FWIW the pump sounds completely normal when opening the driver's door, turning the key, amount of time running, etc. Usually when the pump kicks on while driving, I can hear it and am very familiar with that sound.

I have an Autel AP200 and can check and see if there are any codes, but with everything working well, would there be any? Might just have to jump out of the car next time I hear it and try to pinpoint the location.

You can monitor the hydraulic pressure and see how fast it falls and if the noise corresponds to when the pressure goes back up meaning pump went on

No problem, will see what I can find out on the next drive. I have doubts it's the F1 pump, as this is a completely different sound and much faster than that ever turns on and off. This is more like something vibrating every 2 seconds, in a wave pattern. Wondering if it could be the passenger side fuel pump, but don't wanna get ahead of myself, haha. Will report back when I know more. Thanks again guys!

I'm thinking fuel pump too. Maybe. If they haven't been replaced maybe time to do so anyway before they start leaking at the top.

Also thinking battery maybe. I had a car that I could audibly hear the fuel pump drop in "tone" when at a stop with the turn signal flashing on and off-- high tone, low tone in sequence with the turn signal flashing one and off. FWIW...

Can you somehow get an audio recording? Hard to place in my mind a purring sound in a wave form.

Yep, will try my best. I wanted to do just that a couple days ago, but here's what happened... very frustrating:

Update - guess I'm not going to worry about this for a while. Went for a drive this past weekend, and happy to say I never heard the noise.

FWIW... -if- this is possibly related to a fuel pump, I left the house with 1/4 tank and filled up close to home. (previous fill-up was July of last year, so not fresh but not super old). Never heard the sound before or after. If it only happens when the car is warm, the pump would have been very submerged by that point. The previous 2 drives were with about 3/8 to 1/4 tank, and both being the first drive in many weeks. This last one was only 1 week since the previous drive. I'm aware of the fuel pump issues on these cars and always do the sniff test before driving, but realize they'll need replacing at some point.

Anyway, just gonna enjoy for now and hopefully all is good. Thank you for the support, I always appreciate the excellent community we have here.

If you hear it again you can try mating two senses together, touch and ear. Remove the side engine covers which are very easy to do, just beware of scratches along the firewall. When you hear the noise get over safely and try to feel where it's coming if you suspect the F1 system. Also with the cover removed it might reduce noise pollution allowing the noise to be detected more clearly. :)
