I’m currently doing my clutch in F430. I replaced the main seal. Should I reseal the brass plug preventatively or leave it as is? It’s not leaking. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Hey Gary, what do you use to reseal that center plug? Hondabond? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Using silicone here is a dangerous game. The plug seals the end of the crankshaft - the last thing you want is a worm of silicone making it's way into one of the oil drillings. I use 518 as it'll dissolve in oil.
If the leak is coming from the main crankshaft seal, it is possible that the oil is continuously dripping even when the engine is off due to gravity. Oil can accumulate in the area above the seal and slowly leak out over time, especially if the car is parked on an incline. Other possibilities for a persistent leak include a damaged or cracked oil pan, a loose oil filter or drain plug, or a leaking valve cover gasket. It is recommended to take the car to a mechanic for a proper diagnosis and repair.
Another possibility is that that plug was originally considered to be a permanent part of the crankshaft so was never meant to be shown as a separately replaceable part (I'm sure there are a bunch of other permanent plugs in that crankshaft to accommodate the various cross-drilling need for the lubrication). The item numbering order on the 430 SPC figures at MCP would strongly indicate that it was a late addition to becoming an available "spare part" (although the 430 Challenge SPC there still doesn't show it): Image Unavailable, Please Login
