I was out driving this afternoon, cruising 45-50 mph. Suddenly heard a crack sound. A small rock hit my windshield leaving a chip and two 1/4" long crack lines around it. Rock came from a weed eater working at a church's lawn. Monday morning I will have it repaired so it won't get any worse. If anyone has any advise as to what to do as far as replacing windshield if needed. Is it advisable to get it done at dealership or is it better to get it done at independent glass shops?
    Thanks in advance

Independent glass specialist ...the dealer will call independent/mobile shop to do it. I had independent shop install mine on my 360

What state are you in? In Florida our insurance companies have to replace them for free.

Same in NC. That will be a nice $5,000+ bill for someone.

I'm in Alabama, I will talk to my insurance company on Monday. I think they pay to repair chip, if windshield is cracked beyond repair they pay for whole windshield. I wonder if this claim would be reason for premium increase, though.
If it needs to be replaced, I hope glass shop really covers everything so as not to scratch my car.

It might depend where the chip is. I just had the entire windshield in my S2000 replaced because the chip was directly in front of me. If it was not, they would just pay to fill it. Ultimately each insurance company will have its own criteria.

It's on the passenger side. Ok. I'd find out what the insurance company's policy is before making the claim. Here's why: If they replace the entire windshield, with a small deductible etc., if there is a "crack" and not a "chip" it might be in your best interests to do nothing at all for a bit, if you catch my drift. I have had many "chips" repaired, and despite being less noticeable, they are always noticeable and drive me crazy.

I was looking at my insurance policy, I have comprehensive coverage with $1,000 deductible. The insurance company lists a different code for comprehensive full glass, but I do not have that option. For now I will have it repaired, don't think it would bother me. I know that sooner or later I will get more chips and or cracks anyways. My insurance agent is also a friend of mine, so I will consult with him Monday and see what he says.

In SC, the insurance has to replace the glass without a claim. I'll do mine here before too long. I think Ferrari of Atlanta said it was $5,500 for a 360. Don't quote me on that though.

Just did my 430 Spider. Safelite Glass. Windshield had to be ordered
from F Dealer, (Denver) shipped from factory to dealer and then to Safelite in
Kansas City. $4,875 for windshield, but because I have the WORST insurance
company in the universe, STATE FARM, had a $1,000 deductiblep. (No special glass coverage)

In NY you have to add glass insurance in your policy for an additional charge otherwise you are not covered.

Just had my windshield chip repaired. I'm happy with the results. I had Safelite do the work and the techs were so happy to work on a Ferrari of course. They asked permission to take pictures of themselves beside the car.
I spoke with my State Farm insurance agent, he said in Alabama the comprehensive insurance would cover the replacement if needed, but I would be responsible for $1,000.00 deductible. State Farm has a comprehensive with glass policy, but they do not offer it in Alabama.
    Glad it wasn't worse though.

USAA rules, I would suggest checking them out if you qualify for memebership.
