I've got a US-spec F430 coupe, some 'nice person' broke the outer driver's side tail light in the spring and I ordered a new one from Ricambi. I installed it and didn't think anything of it over the summer until my brother was following me one day and told me my tail lights were funny - they didn't match. Sure enough the new one lights up completely differently:

The driver's side is the new one, the passenger side is the 'old' one. When the headlights/fog lights are on only the inner half of the driver's side lights up but it lights up at full intensity; the passenger side lights up 360° but at low intensity. (The first pic, it's a bit hard to see but the DHS is definitely brighter than the PHS and you can just make out the half-illuminated portion of the DHS)

When the brakes are applied the centre white reverse light comes on on the driver's side and the passenger side 360° goes to full intensity. (The second pic, the centre portion of the DHS is lit)

I thought Ricambi sent me the wrong light but when I pulled it the serial number definitely matches the USA left-hand outer tail light in the catalogue - 193181:

    Ferrari F430 (05-08) Parts : Table 130 - FRONT AND REAR LIGHTS

Any ideas? Don't tell me replacing a tail light requires a stupid SD2...

Did you use the same bulbs and bulb holder from your old tail lights?
If i remember correctly, I don't recall the outer lights having the backup (middle) bulb in it. I think that the middle bulb should be on the inner lights only.
Looks like you might have the wrong bulbs in the bulb holder, or that the bulb holder is the wrong one. I will have to go home later and verify though.
The bulb holder and the bulbs are different from inner to outer lights. I think that the inner lights are single filaments and have the reverse lights, while the outer lights are double filaments and do NOT have backup lights (small middle bulb). But i will need to verify later which is which.

Those pieces came assembled from Ricambi, 193181 included the bulbs. I took it apart more for curiosity's sake, and because I like taking things apart. :)

What is it you dont understand?

The outer bulbs ''with two poles'' as you describe it are double action bulbs. 5w tail lights and 21w brake lights........

The little bulb is the revers light as that one goes in the middle where the clear lens is in the middle.
The double filament bulb is your brake/turn signal bulb.

I suppose the US cars are slightly different than the original cars. On the original Ferrari F430 as intended by the factory the little bulb on the outer lights is the turn signal. The little bulb on the inner lights is the reversing light. This might vary depending on the local laws of the country of the car is imported into.

I think so, in to iced that all my bulbs are white and US laws require that the turn lights be yellow or red. So I think that US is slightly different. I did read somewhere that non-US lights in the rear all four light up. But for US, only the outer lights light up. I think someone sells a conversion for all four lights to light up.

Putting the light back in and I do notice that there are different numbers on the lights.
Here is what is on them, notice one is 80 and one is 82.
    Inner light:
    INT. DX USA
    193180
    28 24 02 04

    Outer light:
    INT. DX USA
    193182
    28 24 02 04

A problem similar to this happened on my car when I purchased it. When applying the brakes, the inner reverse light would come on and half the tail light would go out - only on one side. The dealer fixed it and said that there was some corrosion on the wires and caused a short, they claimed to replace a couple blown fuses and redid the wiring.

I finally tracked down the original broken light that I took off the car - the part number on the sticker at the top is indeed different than what's listed in Ricambi's catalogue. Looking up this part number (193183) it just so happens to correspond to what Ricambi lists as the inner rear light for the US. It sounds like Ricambi unfortunately has an error in their catalogue. To further confirm, I took the old light apart and found exactly what f430_8451 found, no centre light bulb but the 2 outer bulbs now have double filaments.

Edit: *hm* I have no idea why the picture is rotated in this post, it shows up correctly oriented on my computer... Sorry for making everyone crick their neck.

Peter was correct and identified an error in our catalog. The original parts catalogs from the F430 release had Inner/Outer (INT/EST) mixed up. Peter has already been sent a coupon code for use on his next purchase on anything at Ricambi America.

I greatly appreciate it when folks find these kinds of discrepancies in our catalog. It's really a challenge to keep everything straight when we're dealing with multiple data sources which occasionally conflict one another.

    Again, thank you!
