Hi Guys, I am back in the market for a older F430. I already owned a 360, 430 and California. Since the 458 is too much for me right now I am going back to my favorite Ferrari; F430 Coupe. Is it safe to buy a 05 F430 with 20k for about 120K or is it wiser to pay $20k more and get the same car with only 6k? I called a Ferrari dealer and asked for a PPI. They said they don't do this. Is this normal or just Southern California? I will DRIVE the car for two years and than probably sell it again. Is Rosso Scuderia a desirable color for resale? Any thoughts is appreciated.
The 05s and 06s and 07s have issues with the exhaust headers and brackets cracking. Also, I think the f1 software was significantly upgraded after th 05 model. The 05 will also need a new clutch very soon. I could easily see the 05 needing 15k of work in the next year, if it doesn't already need it. If you can, spend the extra for a high mileage 08 model which will still be under warranty. The miles aren't a big deal as these cars are built to be driven, but they definately had some problems that were ironed out over the production run. I bought an 07 certified from a Ferrari dealer with 4,000 miles. It has 11,000 miles now and has had the entire exhaust system replaced under warranty due to cracks in the headers and brackets, a very common pre-08 problem. These cars are great and the Ferrari service has been fantastic, but if you buy one of these cars out of warranty, you are really rolling the dice in terms of future repair costs. Although the exhaust system is suppose to be warranties for more then three years as per U.S. Law, I have heard that Ferrari has a way of finding loopholes in the law when it comes to covering the exhaust under the U.S. Emissions law.
I don't mean to be an ass, but aren't you yourself a great person to answer this question? You have already owned a 430 so I assume you should know the car inside out??? And as we all know, you can't judge a car purely on the odometer. We've all seen really clean and well maintained 20k miles cars as well as low mileage cars that were beat to hell. Generally, a lower mileage car is preferred.
Thanks for your replays. I have never had a Ferrari with 20k and I am not afraid of it at all. I think it's a shame that the majority owners of a Ferrari drive less than 5k a year. These cars are built to be driven and not only on the street. But if I ever want to sell a Ferrari with 30k, most (Ferrari) people freak out and stay away from it. Is this true or not? That's what I am trying to figure out here. Pay the extra $20k now or get less later. How much less later? Who knows.
Well, you answered your own question by creating this thread. Yes most buyers will be scared of a "recent" ferrari with more than 30k miles.
There are a couple F430 with 5k miles and *asking* $130k on Ferrariads. I bet they sell $125k. Any F430 with 20k miles should sell for $115-120k no more. My opinion only, good luck! I wouldn't buy any Ferrari and think I would sell it in the next 2 years without taking a serious loss on the car, if you could move it at all.
Thanks Robert. Either I am a horrible searcher or all those cars have been sold. I can't find one with 5k miles for below $130.......
go for the lower mileage! you will have fewer headaches in the long run. you tend to get what you pay for, IMHO.
I've had my '05 since new. Now with 17K miles, it certainly is not nearing clutch time. I haven't spent 15K on it total including tires and brakes (lot's of track time). The exhaust manifold was replaced under warranty at about 12K miles. The feds require 8 years on ECUs, OBDs, and cats. Everything else is only required for 2. I've heard conflicting statements about the manifolds because of pre-cats and state laws that may differ so it is important to talk to a local dealer for the straight poop. My car has been very, very reliable. BTW, a high mile '08 will be just as close to needing a clutch as an '05 and they are not covered under warranties. Dave
I would counter that with saying low miles means the "bugs" are not yet worked out of it. If you are out of warranty you will be paying for the "debugging". A thorough inspection will tell you about each. Trust me the cars do not implode over 20 or 30,000 miles. In fact I would argue they run better IF they have been loved their whole lives. As far as saleability down the road- they ALL sell if the price is right. So, whatever price curve you save on buying- will convey again when you sell. You save $20,000 because of mileage... thats ALOT of "free" service that the lower mile example could just as likely have occur. Buy on condition & history. But what do I know...
Go with horrible searcher!! LOL! This one on the first page! http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=4739 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=4394 This one over 20k miles, http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=4266 Looks like a couple others most have recently sold, because they are gone.
Actually, mileage was unlimited but time is 3 years. Spider buyers got zapped an extra year of warranty for about 6K. It was required. Dave
Go with the higher mileage, all the bugs if any will be already taken care off. It will not need $15k nor anything else but the yearly fluids and so unless the car is a rat, do a PPI. I already have over 16k miles, clutch still good, the headers changed for the new ones at 10k miles and the car has cost me nothing but the maintenance costs which are cheap. I was recently offered over $120k for it and but I backed down from the sale.
Thank you all for your input. I finally found my car from Ferrari of Seattle. 2005 Ferrari F430 Red/Black with 6640 miles for $130k and a 12 month Ferrari Power Normal Warranty. It has very few extra options but that is totally fine with me. One owner and 6.3% clutch wear. What do you guys think? I am really excited about it. Check it out here: http://www.maseratiofseattle.com/inventory/details.aspx?ID=364
beautiful car but you are paying the harcore premium for the ULTRA low miles (I bought mine with 6k as well) if you opt for 12k+ miles you may save 10k.. but if you plan to keep her then good on ya!
I couldn't agree more. I have had a bunch of warranty work and have driven the car a lot and it now runs better at 11k miles then when i bought it at 4k miles. I will never again limit my search to ultra low mileage cars.
