I've been looking at this car and talking to the rep. I like that the car has had only one owner. I like the price. But the mileage and the service records concern me. It has had regular maintainence, but then had one whopper of a $22,000 service bill. Also, headers have not been done for example. Of course if I go further I would have a PPI done, but I'm not sure given the mileage I should even bother.

    Thoughts?

Hard to be picky at that price for an 08 spider. Assuming there are no large maintenance items that need addressing and the records are complete, it would appear to be a good buy. Headers are 3-5k investment.

For an 08, that would be the buy of the year. 4 weeks ago i bought an 08 coupe for a lot more, and advertised prices for an 08 would be in the 140,000's with less miles. Even with the miles, that's way low. caveat emptor. PPI and let us know what happens

    Seats look a little worn.

All service records show it has ONLY been maintained by Ferrari dealer.

Wow, you've got the deal of the century there if the car checks out okay. Plus, if it's an 08, chances are very good it already has the MK2 headers. Check the assembly number. I believe a number higher than 74557 will have the new headers.

I'd also take a really close look at the carbon brakes... I've been told the only accurate way is to measure AND weigh the rotors.

Nice car at a great price. Just remember, that a PPI does not insure against future repairs. The second clutch is about ready to be replaced (no matter what the SD3 reader says), sooner or later the leather dash will bubble up and yes the seat (at least the bolster) will need replacement. Also, make sure the top is thoroughly checked out. If it is screwed up, it can run $10K-$15K to replace. BUT, at that price, I would seriously consider buying it.

Make sure you look at Carfax and do a VIN check. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

And the dash... Look for signs of shrinkage especially around the defrost vents. With this many miles it must have spent a fair amount of time in the sun (unless he drove exclusively at night?)

I believe the F430 Spider recall affected only 2005-2007 cars. Should l be concerned of the problem that caused the fires with a 2008?

Did you run VIN by Carbon to see if he has any info on the car that could be of interest?

Price is reasonable for several reasons. Typical Ferrari buyers are afraid of what is considered by many as high-miles, and to most 44k is, and that whopper of a bill is why--if you rely on the dealer, maintenance is expensive. If you drop your car off at a FCar dealer and say fix it, you will likely get a long list and a big bill. If you can do a lot yourself, and don't plan to resell it, this is a steal. Apparently this is a wholesale dealer, and many here are accustomed to retail asking prices, so again, seems like a steal. There is risk, but the mileage would not concern me if PPI is good and plan to keep and drive it a lot.

    That's an amazing price if that's a no-stories car.

Here are the last few entries on AutoCheck:

"07/13/2012 WILLOW GROVE, PA 43,000 Motor Vehicle Dept. TITLE (Title #:69642724)

    03/11/2013
PA 43,100 Auto Auction REPORTED AT AUTO AUCTION

    04/15/2015
EASTERN REGION, 44,325 Auto Auction REPORTED AT AUTO AUCTION"

There is nothing wrong with a car being sold at an auction, but I have never seen a sequence of auctions like this.

It was reported at 2 auctions in 2013, 6 months apart (last reported mileage: 43,510). Then it was reported at 2 auctions in 2014 (last mileage: 44,034). Finally, it was reported at another auction in 2015 (mileage: 44,325).

I don’t know what to make of this. Perhaps the explanation is it did not sell at any of the auctions. Maybe the original owner just couldn’t get it sold at the earlier auctions for the price he wanted?? However, in the last auctions, it was reported as a "Dealer Vehicle."

I hope someone who has more knowledge of sales at auctions would explain this; I am very curious.

I wouldn't be concerned with the miles at that great price. Ferrari of Atlanta had a 430 for sale a while ago with over 100k miles and the guys in the service dept, who weren't trying to sell me, said it was great and pulled harder than lower mile examples they had for sale. IMHO, the miles are more about value than condition of the car or what to expect in terms of reliability.

I just read this and wondered if the problem was ever seen in 2008 models:

"2009, Ferrari recalled about 2,000 2005–2007 F430 Spiders in the U.S., due to the risk that heat from the engine could cause the soft top hydraulic hoses to fracture and leak flammable fluid onto the V8 motor, resulting in a fire."
