This from Johann Rupert, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at a visit to his museum & winery in Franschoek, South Africa last year.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________
    Fellow Petrol Heads,

The press has been full of wild speculation about our son Anton, "writing off" the museum's F50. This is simply not true.

    Herewith the facts.
Firstly, we are extremely relieved that nobody sustained any injuries of any kind. This is any parent's only concern. Secondly, the F50 has NOT been "written-off" as the press have stated.

The garage report states: "The Tub, engine, gearbox, doors, right rear panel, engine cover, rear wing, front left suspension, right rear suspension, headlight clusters rear lights, up rights stub-axels, drive shafts and brake assemblies all appear to be undamaged. The largest extent of the damage is carbon fibre body parts and rear left suspension and front right suspension radiators and oil coolers.

Three rims and all the tyres will have to be replaced."

The car will therefore be repaired in South Africa.

Clearly, the press reports have been wildly inaccurate – wrongly suggesting some high speed accident. But, I suppose, the facts should never interfere with a "good story."

As we are all aware, cars that are not driven regularly, suffer irreparable damage. The museum cars are therefore driven often.
I have thus asked a number of people that I trust (including my son) to drive the museum cars. This has been going on for well over a year.

Therefore, if anyone has to be blamed, it is me. But I do not think I chose the drivers incorrectly.

Anton has done an advanced driving course and has been my co-driver in two Mille Miglia's. This race, as we all know, entails driving fast cars that are at least fifty years old. These vehicles therefore have no disc brakes, traction control or ABS and are notoriously hard to handle. He drove brilliantly, during very difficult conditions, as anyone who has competed in this 1,000 mile race can confirm.

My wife and I are very proud of our three children. Despite growing up under an inevitable spotlight, they have all coped very well. They are not spoilt brats.

Anton normally drives an eight year old, second-hand Toyota.

    Regards,
    Johann Rupert.

PS: I did far worse things at Anton's age, often involving an Alfa Romeo Gulia Super. I am afraid that it is probably in the genes. Finally, even my good friend, Sarel van der Merwe, badly pranged his dad's Porsche whilst still at school.

    Sounds like a good attitude!

Never a good thing, when it's easier to list the "undamaged" bits...:(

I didn't know there was an F50 "mishap", but it seems the father is keeping everything in perspective. Clearly someone that recognizes we can all make mistakes. I respect his support of his son.

Where did he originally post this statement?

Glad to hear no one was injured.

Now if you could ask Mr. Rupert to send me some Dunhill sunglasses that are impossible to find in Louisiana...

This was sent directly to supporters of Mr. Rupert's museum in an e-mail. This done, after some speculative press reports.

Ahhh, it hurts to look at! But still, it is very cool that his father isn't blowing everything out of proportion, and pretty much saving his son's ass from anything that would tarnish the family name.

    Wow.

Lets review: Daddy had to write a letter to defend his son and downplay the incident and the resulting damage...

    Which is his right...

While I can't attest to the facts of what may or may not have happened, he has the right to defend his son.

As a father myself, I would defend my sons reputation if it came into question wrongly...

Isn't crashing exotics part of a billionaire heirs duites? In all seriousness, I don't see how a car accident (as long as it isn't reckless or EtOH related) would tarnish someones reputation regardless of how wealthy one is or how expensive the car is. I know several guys, not as wealthy as an heir of a business tycoon, that has had accidents. Their reputations came out unscathed. As long as nobody is injured and one is insured, who except for the insurance company cares?

I think that Johann released the statement so as the world would not think that his kids use this sort of thing as daily transport. As he says -
Anton's regular car is an 8 year old Toyota. He (Johann) is a regular stand-up guy, regardless of his wealth and has worked hard to give the family a sense of grounding. The pass that this happened on is a favorite with the bike guys and sports car crowd on Sundays. From the angle, it appears that he slid off the road and perhaps down an embankment. There are some very severe drops in this very rugged and windy pass.
By the way - here is the link to the museum. http://www.fmm.co.za/

I don't need one, it is in old Dutch! Basically it is just what is mentioned in the original post that it is the museum car and witnesses saying it went like a red stripe up a hill and lost control then into a ditch, "What is daddy going to say?", also the uncle of the 22 yo driver, Anthony Rupert, was killed in a BMW in the same spot 2001 at age 49. The before chrash value is estimated 4-5 million Rand.

Well I heard about this a few weeks ago and let me tell you the car does look a bit worse than shown in that pic..

I can translate that article but I fear it wont be very good as my Afrikaans isnt that great....have seen Anton driving a SuperAmerica aswell.

An interesting aside this F50 was owned by a late Mr Kebble who also slightly damaged the car while participating in a hill climb a few years ago, the very minor damage did take quite a while to fix.
