Considering price, performance, racing heritage, gear-shift and convertibility, I feel the F50 is the true competitor to the Carrera GT, more than the Enzo.
Thus the question: F50 or CGT?

Has anyone driven or owned both? If so, how would you compare/contrast the two?

have driven in both as well as enzo and zonda among others-
i would take the f50 anyday over it- i think it looks better- is more of a drivers car- feels faster- can't go wrong in ferrari red....
i would take the f50 definately.

F50. Does anyone know how much it would cost to strip the paint and then spray some clear coat over it for the carbon fiber look? Or is that impossible?

While anything could be done CF is very sensitive to UV and I'm not sure it would be such a good idea. The Zonda's and Bug's looked great but I'm not sure if the clear protected the CF over time. Another thing to consider is how the underlying weave looks. Unless it's nice it might look funky. JS had a black one in NO gloss which still looks great. Removing the paint would have to be done by hand VERY carefully. The headlights are problem also. Sal perpared one at WWOC which they painted black but F had to do the headlights as once they're sealed they didn't want to come apart. The guys who painted my P4 could do it but I'd guess 30K easily.

Since I had the chance to drive both, I'll go without any hesitation with the F50. If you like all the electronics help, well, than go with the CGT. The power on the F50 feels more brutal and the sound is just out of this world(especialy with pipes!! ). The CGT is a extraordinary car but many year of high tech seperates both car. I don't want even go into the look etc..
On the F50, get the stupids seat belts change, they sucks!!

Could you elaborate on how the F50 feels like more of a driver's car. I thought and have read that the CGT is about as perfect as it can be, barring an Enzo or an F40.

Also, since the Zonda is in the same price, gear-shift and convertibility category, how does it compare to the CGT and F50? I've read nothing but rave reviews about it.

It all depends on where you would purchase it for the price..
i would take zonda anyday over f50- the zonda is an absolutely beautiful car and is, imo, one of the best cars ever produced- however, i have not been in a mclaren yet... the zonda would be my choice if you're willing to shove that much money out.

the f50 is more of a drivers car meaning its a bit harder to drive- when i was driving it i felt like i constantly needed to be focusing on the road and what i was doing because the thing was so bloody quick...

    back to the zonda,
if you're interested i can get you some contact information and refer you... they are great and currently are only building about 12 a year (if i remember correctly).

if you have any more questions pm me- i can supply you with photos or if you're in the area we can maybe go out for a spin- pm me)

Many thanks sh4m, but I wouldn't buy a Zonda over a CGT or an F50, esp. not before I see the 575's replacement. Something about the Zonda's line doesn't agree with me, although the interior is exquisite. Views can change in the flesh of course. But I must see the 575 replacement before I spend anywhere near the Zonda's price.

I so want to do that to a F40 but knowing many friends and family members in auto body trade it would be inpossible. You would have to sand off the paint to get to the carbon but you can't sand it because you'll scratch the epoxy on the carbon and it's basically messed up.
people say you can use chemicals to melt the paint off but anything that strong is most likely going to f-up the clearcoat and carbon fiber.

The factory is the only place to truely treat the carbon to it's needs that won't effect any <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=22&k=uv%20light" onmouseover="window.status='uv light'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">uv light</a> or anything.
I suppose the only way to do that now is if your in line for a new Ferrari that is made out of carbon, then you could call them and ask them just to clear coat it and they'll be more then happy to do it because they save money on the paint.

Actually, clear coating is not that cheap, because you don't save a step when you're doing it.

VROOM! - You couldn't strip it then clearcoat it because of the reasons Jim (Napolis) stated. When you prime it there's very little layer to sand down to without damaging the CF, and probably more importantly the lines of the weave and different patches of CF would look rather off - when CF is painted generally there's less need to line up the weave with the same effort as when it's clearcoated.

PS: I'd get the F50. More wild, more collectible. CGT's are going to plummet in price after the 1,500 are made.

there is also the old problem of the carbon weave not matching up at the various seams. It would look incredibly stupid if it didn't and this is the reason pagani said he won't do another one with no paint, too big of a pain in the ass.

    That is a tough choice.....

The Porsche would seem like an easier car to get around in withou drawing a crowd. But I love Ferrari's.....

So after thinking long and hard about it, I would get an F40!! :) hehe

F-50. IMHO at stratospheric levels the contenders must have Legacy, Pedigree, Ability, Rarity and Beauty. Not necessarily in order. Both cars have all BUT the Ferrari has got more L, R and B.
