Went to inspect an F512M today. Car looked splendid in all respects. I have one question regarding the black goo I have seen at the inside of the luggage compartment lid. As you can see in the attached photos, the black housing (air duct housing?) is held in place by unpainted rivets and there is black rubber goo used to seal the seams. It seems like a bodged job to me, but then again, I am no expert at these cars.

Anyone care to tell me if something has been "fixed up" here, or if it is supposed to be like that?

    Thanks,
    Rik Gruwez

I would have to agree, it's not right. Appears that at sometime this has been repaired and not a very good job at that. You can buy black rivets and do the job right, but I would get a PPI on the car by a qualified person.

Agree.. that does not look factory.. It appears at one point someone changed the duct and used steel (unpainted) rivets and was a bit sloppy with the sealant..

    Dear Ferraristi,

This panel has been redone....but not uncommon.

This is the rain/water drain catch panel under the air intake. If / when the front shocks wear out and the front hood drops on the upper trunk, the rain panel can crack. (impact with old brittle Florida sun hardened plastic )

    Yes....this has happened to me.

I have replaced mine a couple of years ago and it is a HUGE job. The rivets used here are standard aluminum pop rivets (same ones I used ) You can't get the black ones. I just took the time to paint each one with the proper satin black with a fine artist brush.

Besides being very sloppy, they used the wrong sealant. They used silicone. They should have used surethane. Surethane is satin in color and can be sanded smooth. ( I spent 4 hours sanding my seams and when you open my hood, you can't tell I even redid it. ( passed two concours / flying colors :) )

This repair does not necessarily indicate crash or hood damage.

    Rick,
When I get home I will post a picture of my hood. So you have some idea and something to compare it too....
Hope the price is fair on the F512M....

Thanks John! That looks a whole lot cleaner than the messy job I saw on the car I inspected.

Hi Gruwez, pretty helpful board here! If you're in the hunt for a 512M, did you check the one at Steve Harris Imports in Salt Lake City? Very straight shooters there. I believe theirs is red also.
