    The other mirrors were much farther ahead and had tiny post securing them. These new mirrors are much closer {wider I believe} and have a much more firm base to keep the vibrations down. After all they're only mirrors, it's an easy fix compared to everything else.

    I think your train of thought is "if it isn't there it can't be harmful". In this case air is moving past these items and if the tips can direct the air to better places, then they can be useful. Look at all the little winglets from years past, small knife blade fins directing air all around the car, all designed to maximize the benefit of the moving air.
