Is it possible to have led steering wheel retrofitted. I have asked one dealer so far and they said no, as Ferrari will not release the proxy software unless steering wheel was ordered new.

I did rolled the dice and picked up a F8 carbon LED steering wheel with correct color stitching. There is a brand new one on ebay at lower price than price I paid, but stitching is different than my interior. New from dealer I was quoted $13.5k.

I figured worst case scenario I can just swap the face plate with my non led steering wheel. The main item I wanted is the carbon steering wheel face plate. LED actually not high priority for me as on my previous 488 had carbon LED steering wheels, I always kept it off.

Some may wonder why I did not picked up a car with LED steering wheel from the start. It was because of carbon wheels and carbon seats was absolute must for me, and every single alcantara interior options.

I would ask a different service center. It's always been possible in the past.

I recently encountered this situation. Ferrari will not sell you the proxy file if you did not order a new steering wheel from them. This was the first time my Ferrari dealership encountered this response from Ferrari headquarters.

I see, will try plan B instead, hopefully not too hard removing the carbon center plate and swap to my current steering wheel. For 458/488/FF/F12 the carbon steering wheel center plate is available at myricambi. Unfortuntely none are avaialble for F8 yet.

    I’d ask a few dealers.

I’m not 100% sure but I believe here in South Africa now there is a new code that dealers cannot do this and they must make parts etc available.

It’s know as right to repair and the code sates that there will be “no unfair restrictions on the sale or distribution of original spare parts; allowing greater consumer choice in choosing suitable spare parts for repairs and maintenance of their motor vehicles”.

In addition if you fit parts of equal quality they cannot void your warranty.

Maybe try some dealers in other countries.

    Update:

Raging Bull Performance in Costa Mesa was able to update the proxy file for me and now the “RPM On Steer” option became available and led now works perfectly fine. Essentially retrofit can be done near hassle free for any FF/F12/812/458/488/F8/Portofino/California, etc if you have already sourced the steering wheel.

Thanks to wonderful Ferrarichat members: 488Longhorn and Winsock for guiding and recommendations during this process. I am 110% happy overall.

Glad you got it working. I don't have an F8 (or an F8 manual), can you give the RPM numbers that correspond with the LEDs on that steering wheel? My 458 is easy: five red LEDs (5500, 6250, 7000, 7750, and 8920.

    My wife's Portofino M looks similar to the F8: 7 red, 2 blue, starting at 5500 rpm, then every 225 rpm: 5500 / 5725 / 5950 / 6175 / 6400 / 6625 / 6850 / 7075 / 7300. I love the LED steering wheel, but have trouble getting useful info out of so many LED with such small increments:

On the turbo cars the RPM's go up VERY FAST. Having just 5 red leds really has not much of a value. The point is NOT counting the LEDS and taking your eye of the road.

There are those that have changed the LED colours and also like the new LED's they offer red red red red red Blue. You can see the change of colour peripherally and not take your eyes of the road. Look at F1 cars.

This is a 100% better layout than the old 5 red leds.

Actually the ONE thing that I really liked about the more newer cars F8 , Portofino is the new steering wheel

I wouldnt care what it would cost if I could change my 488 GTB wheel to a F8 wheel, all leather , LED's and the same colour bezel as the 488 NO CARBON. But im sure the clock would be different :(

Correct, thats the way. White would be even better but at least it's a different colour.

It is similar to Portofino M, starts at 5500 rpm. If I am driving hard, I shift when I see first blue light if road condition is safe

You could have a look at the "Ferrari Genuine" program - it typically lists what could be added as retrofit.
For instance the steering wheel with LED is listed for the F8, but Ferrari may want you to buy the new wheel from them to make it work...

My guess is it will work, It could even be plug and play without programming in your case.

There are quite a few of them listed on ebay:
    https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=ferrari+california+steering+wheel&_sacat=0&_sop=16

To confirm, best to contact any reputable indy shop and ask if they can check and see their scanning tool has ability to turn on the RPM on steer function for California.

Hi: thanks for your responses. I have a launch I know I can check clutch wear etc. It may have the ability to turn on the rpm on the steer.
As for the cruise control, worst case is it won't wont. I will get them and see what I can do.
