So I was just reading my new FAA Safety Briefing magazine and I learned that the new administrator does not have a private pilots license.

Maybe it's long been that way and I now pay attention more as a Private Pilot but IMO it is utterly inexcusable for The Administrator to not be a pilot. He simply cannot fully appreciate that which he does not do.

Bureaucrats! I'm pretty sure BHO has never run a business either and it shows.

Aviation is not just about transportation.

Neither Jane Garvey nor Marion Blakey were pilots.

While I think it would be a good thing for the FAA Administrator to be a licensed (and active) pilot, I'm not sure it's that big a deal.

I think it's a big deal, actually. Anyone with a serious interest in aviation would be a pilot. It indicates more of an interest in administration, but not enough interest in the activity being administered to even be a Private Pilot. To me it's like having someone who's never served in the military as Army Chief of Staff. I'm not saying administrative skills are unimportant, I just think the leader should do what he leads.

As far as I know, no FAA Administrator has ever had a qualification as an ATC specialist, yet that's arguably at least as important a part of the job. And few ATC specialists are pilots, for that matter.

I think the best Administrators have been those who were pilots, and in fact had management experience (Dave Hinson, for instance), but that's how it goes.

Many of the past Adminstrators had military flying experience, particularly in fighters. I'm not sure that's all that relevant to what the FAA does either.
