Freinds, I am almost done with my 2 year service and put 5 gallons of fuel in and my facet red top fuel pump is leaking. I was wondering if after 2 years the rubber would go bad. I found one here. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecID=8462 Can anyone suggest or recommend a different supplier or solution. I am not sure whether I assume it has the 1/4" ports? The new one says it operates without troublesome seals or diaphragms???? Rob Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I just installed this one in my 308 and it works great. That's a much better price than I paid as well.
When I ordered mine, it came with the fittings, however, I believe that they are 1/4 fittings. The site that you posted also indicates 1/4, so it must be correct.
Mine does not say red top but is gold with a red label probably 20+ years old. I do not want to flood the carbs should I maybe get the smaller GPM with the 1/4" ports??? What size were the 1/4 inch fittings for. I need 5/16 or 8mm for the 8mm hose I am using BTW I never took the bottom off a rubber washer and micron screen probably could just try to replace the washer but think I should get a new one. Ive paid more for parts that were not broken.....
I think what they are refering to is that these new units are solid state - the original Facet pumps used points(!) and those had to be sealed off from the fuel inside the pump body. As I understand it, these new ones work much the same as FI pumps whose electrical components are immersed in the fuel itself.
All, Maybe I should have gotten a new washer. I am worried if i get the 1/4" ports that I will end up with to high a fuel flow??? here are some pics of my old pump, best I can guess it has been there for at leat 20 years, not the original but must have been replaced at some time??? 4right, did the fitting you received were they barbed or like mine in the photo. I am guessing the extra fuel overflows into the right tank???The WSM manual says 100 liter per hour??? The WSM says 100 liter per hour which translates to 26 gallons per hour and WSM says 3 m. H20 which = 4.27 psi. The red top says: Maximum fuel delivery 45 gallons per hour. Maximum pressure 6 to 8 psi. Typical flow 30 gallons per hour at 2 psi. 1/4 NPT female ports. Negative ground (12v) only. So I am guessing the red top is what I want the silver top does not meet the minimum specs. Peter what kind of pump do you have? How are your long coolant pipes mine are showing some deterioration at the front but the lengyt and rear ection are fine I just put the clamps farther back on the smoother pipe area.......???? No leaks ... yet!!!
This is exactly what I have just been through. The old one (with a Bendix lable) packed up and I finished up buying the one you show Robert. The guys that serviced the carbs and set them up on the rolling road said that webbers are best on about 4.5 psi.so I had to have a pressure reducer. It all works really well now. In the UK the pump was about£70 so thats about the same as your $99. The pump make quite a buzz while its working so you need to make sure it is flexibly mounted. The regulator is an adjustable petrol King and the carb garage set it at the same time as the carbs. Hope this is some help.
I forgot to say that the connectors were in the box. It looks like an international pack and in some places they offered a choice of straight or elbow unions. Mine came with straight and that worked fine.
I am thinking I will get the silver top facet pump as it is 4-5 psi and rated at 36 gph which fits in with the WSM specs and my attachments. Normally i get the biggest abd best but if what you are saying is correct hen the red top would be overkill. The one I had the 476-087 worked great. Any thoughts???
You need the lower 4PSI., IMO...6 -8PSI is too much!! As you noted there is a TINY line, maybe 1/8" not much more, that relieves pressure and excess flow back into the RH tank.
I still have the original BCD pump. I rebuilt it several years ago with a new motor from Superformance. Unfortunately, they don't sell them anymore. Knock on wood, it's still working. I need to go through my PM's because about a year or two ago, there was a guy here who had contacts in Italy about getting these pumps back into production. I never heard back if this was successful or not. I had at one time a Facet pump in my car (while I had the original out to be repaired), but couldn't stand it as it was incredibly noisy. As far as I can tell, they're okay. I think that was okay what you did. I don't want to put doubt in your mind, but did you clean the oxidation off really well on the pipes before putting the hoses on?... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here is the picture of the new pump with the fittings. Both before and after installation. The hose size is 9.5mm. Its rated for 7psi. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks everyone. I talked to a nice guy at Pegasus, he seemed to know his stuff had a 246 dino coupe races formula atlantic, porsches etc. I gave him my specs and he suggested the silver top pump which has less pressure. he looked my the car in his data base and said that was what was recommended. he also said everyone should have a pressure regulator on their pump. I feel good as it is the same number as I took off the numbers for the model are stamped on the mounting bracket. Not sure how I get the trick plastic connecter off one pump to another? 4right thanks for the pics, I am using Dave's trick 8mm hose so hopefully the littler ports will work. Peter, on a side note I think that was the problem I scrubbed so much all the gunk came off exposing the corosion in some areas very deep and all on the outside of the hose within about 1" of the bead, I put the clamp about 1.5" away on som smoother area no leaks yet!! On the pumps I think someone told me they had a whole box of them??? Rob
It may have been Dennis McCann. They cleared out their stock on ebay a few years ago, all new, all OEM. Sold for good prices too. I should have bought 'em all!
And because of this return hose, I fail to see how you could over pressurize the carbs with any of these low pressure pumps. You are not going to develop 8 psi fuel pressure when the far end of the fuel path is a hose right back into the fuel tank! A few years ago my original BCD pump started making a funny noise. It was still pumping fuel, but sounded like it was going to pack it in soon! I replaced it with one of these facet pumps. Works fine. The facets do make a weird thumping sound though.
Like a kid peeing in a stream! LOL! I kindof like the rattling sound, one of mine just hums and I have to listen harder to hear if it's on!
Birdman what model did you get. I liked mine as i made a clicking noise which was reassuring when staring the car........ Glad I got the same model as it came today with no fittings, luckily the ones I have are in great shape. No one answered can I just cut the wire in mine and use a wire crimp connector or should I solder it. Can you get the old plastic connectors like on theis and the AC connectors? Are they still available? I did not look that close to it but I looks like it cannot be removed????
My original pump was doing the same, it always made an unusual consistent noise, however, all of a sudden it just started to make a crackling sound. Once I had the new Facet pump installed it really sounded unusual, at first I thought that I must have wired it incorrectly. Once the fuel started flowing through it, the noise subsided but still there and louder than the original.
