A backcracker friend of mine wishes to build up a Factory Five coupe and race it around Texas tracks. I know redcar1 has (or had) a cobra as does his father. But which series would be most active and most bang for the buck around Texas?

Both NASA and SCCA have a place for it, talk to Mark. SCCA is more strict on the rules, build to SCCA rules and NASA will be fine with that, not vice versa.

Bang for the buck? Avoid SCCA then. NASA is much less bureaucratic IMO. e.g wont fail your annual tech for a 1.75" diameter tow-hook instead of a 2", and write you up for less than showroom quality paint/body repair. However, if you pull up in tech with a new Miata, they'll spend an hour helping you get the correct SCCA stickers, drilling an inspection hole in your cage for you, etc. All the while making other drivers miss qualifying.

In my experience - the best bang for the buck is in open road racing, and doing open track events. Just keep the GCR handy, and don't do anything while building the car that will be hard to reverse if you ever want to go SCCA/NASA.

For racing a Factory Five Cobra in Texas, NASA is definitely the way to go. I raced mine with both SCCA and NASA. Like Rob and Lusso said, if you enjoy tech-inspection games more than driving then SCCA is the place to be, but if you want to actually race anything unique, NASA is the way to go.

Check www.nasatx.com for details. We raced at MSR Houston last wknd, and there were 3 FFR Cobras. There are not many guys in Texas running FFR Spec legal cobras, most of them are modified with more power, brakes, suspension, which makes the cars much more fun to drive, and you're still in the same run group, just technically a different class. NASA has a pretty full calendar this year, and seems to be thriving.
