What do you guys think of the factory restored Datsun 240z cars? Apparently, they only did about 40 cars before they realized that even the factory was going upside down. (Imagine that!) Like a baby duck imprinting on its momma, I love 240zs, but they do have this issue with rust. This is why the factory restorations are appealing, but they are expensive.

    Your thoughts?

If I recall correctly, the factory was selling the restored cars for $30k. It was costing them over $40k to do the resto.

Even for the factory the cost of fixing them is greater than the increase in value. IE, 5k to buy, 5k to fix, only worth 7k at sale, you're "upside down" by 3k.

Yep, that was the business issue. They didn't even make up for it in volume.
I have had 3, a 72 and 2 73's. Last 73 was in family since new, Minilites, direct drive 5spd from roadster, Coilover Koni's with threaded collars, 3.0 Diesel crank, built by Electromotive. 42DCO Webers. Persimmon over Black, A/C, 17k miles on it when I sold it in 86. Dumb.Used to give 911's fits.

Dale, it was more like "factory commissioned" rather than "factory restored". IIRC a SoCal shop did the work at Nissan's request. They sold for 25-30K and had a 1 yr warranty.

It is getting harder and harder to find original early Z cars that have not been chewed up by the rust bug. While spending $30k on one of these restored cars might seem over the top, I'm sure that you can spend this much just trying to restore a rust bucket. Me, I'd rather be driving.

I had a '79 280Z that I loved. LOVED IT! Sold it for 2500.00 in '88. STUPID !!! Now I do have a new 350Z Roadster. Which I know many people here dislike, but the Roadster is a lot of fun. Not the same as the 280 though.

Correct. As usual, dealers were marking them up (at least mine was) $5K-$10K over. The problem with these is that, once you drive them, they're just used Z cars all over again. The cars we sold were primarily to collectors who had no intention of driving them.

Check out the mobile home of any aging, over the hill, disco crawler. He might even throw in a leather jacket and some gold neck chains to complete the "aura" of a 1970s vintage Z car. But beware: Eight track tapes are becoming hard to find. Having to anty up for an authentic "Peter Frampton Live" eight track tape could offset the bargain deal on the car itself.

Dale, scour AZ, NV and NM. Should be able to find something worthy of rebuilding down there. If you find 2 let me know, I have always wanted to convert one to a Chevy V8.

You da man. With the six, an early Z is a Porsche eater. With an eight, F-Cars better watch out! It's all about power to weight. Power to weight.

Have you tried Les Canaday at Classic Datsun Motorsports?

    http://www.classicdatsun.com/

I've always heard that he has one of the best Datsun restoration and prep shops in the US. Thought about having him restore my '69 2000, but the wait to get in to his shop was too long.

There are Z cars that carry 350 or 327 Chevy V8s and they were known as Scarabs. I hope that is spelled correctly. I would think that car would be all the power one would need short of owning something with 12 cylinders and a large price tag. I have seem some of them and I have heard they do wonders when pushed :)

Members on www.hybridz.org have some nice V8 swaps (plus one or two Jag and BMW V12's floating around).

Also, here is probably my favorite alternative engined Z (mmmm twin turbo infinity V8): http://zparts.com/showcase/engines/pages/q45v8z-testfit.html (don't forget to scroll down:)).

The old Scarab kits mounted the engine too far forward. These guys at, Jags That Run are the king of conversions, very thorough covering mechanical , electrical, suspension, cooling and emissions for each kind of conversion.

Here is information specific to the 240/60/80 V8 swap, Datsun 240Z/V8 Swap

A real addiction, I have owned two 71's and three '72's. I am down to one as a daily driver since I got the 308. This 240 (yellow) will beat the 308 in a drag race up to 90 MPH easily. At 700 pounds lighter it's no problem.

2.5 ltr balanced and blue printed, forged flat tops.
E88 head, Cannon intake/ 280 degree duration cam, 112 degree lobe separation, .488 lift
    3 Weber 40 DCOE carbs
Crane XR3000 solid state ignition with optical trigger.
Motorsports 6 into 1 header/ hand fabbed heatshield
    4 core radiator W/electric fan
2.5" mandrel exhaust with Flowmaster muffler from Chev 454 V8
    Motorsports street performance springs

The red 240Z shown was an auto cross car I had destined for a V8 conversion. I sold it a month ago because of the time I spend on the 308. Sorry to see it go.

Out of the five Z's that I had, I had to replace ALL of the floor boards in three of them. Gone from rust.

Sweeeeeet. You could eat off that motor.

I've had four Zs over the years - a '70 (like production number 300 something), '71, '72,'73 (swapped out the Sus for dual webers). Can't remember all the specs as the years have gone by, but the '71 had an L28 blocked bored out, triple webers (occasionally ran with just air horns - no filters - it howled) lopey cam and headers into a custom dual exhaust that at 6,000 rpms came as close to an Fcar sound as a straight six can be. Fiberglass body panels (remember Jim Cook Racing?) Tboned a woman that ran a red light. It was cold and the fiberglass disintegrated on impact. Then 15 years passed and I picked up a '72, two owner that had been in west Texas for it's first 30 years - no rust on the pans at all. Almost a daily driver. Started restoring and lost interest after a year and sold - wish I still had it. I was always a Mopar guy - I was gonna see if JTR had a kit to slap a 340 six-pack into that Z. Guess it's a moot point now.

Keep that yellow Z -DO NOT SELL (unless to me)
