Fair price on a 95 355 GTB

If I were to offer my 355s up forsale because " I was interested in selling" the would be offered at $100k and $80k respectively. The right buyer would pay that.

If i "needed" to sell the cars "now" they would be $50k and $40k respectively.

Ferraris are not easy to sell period. Needing to sell and not needing to sell are VERY different situations.

Other than Luke who had an ultra rare and desireable combination, you would be hard pressed to off load your car at above 50-60 k for among the finest examples in a short period of time.
Luke asked $80 for his car, is he prepared to share with us what the actual sale price was? He sold it in two days and I know many people had their eye on that car for a long time.
Mine are two very special cars one of which is as Dave Helms calls "the grand slam" of 355 and has ALL of the right mods. I would also have to sit on it a long time to move it at my price.

Look at J.Salmons 355 red tan beauty. It sat for a long time and I think he finally was in the 50's after selling off some of the mods separately.

With the limited information provided by the OP, I say this is 35k - 45k car. Rebuilt engine??? Yikes!!!

 

Since your profile is not filled in, we have no idea what market you are in. And, to me, a fresh engine is valuable - why would it not be?

If you are not comfortable, the best thing to do is to find another car. Why take the risk if you already have concerns?

I fail to understand how an engine rebuild is a bad thing. If the car checks out, buy it imo. It took me a while to find a yellow/black gtb 6 speed, when I did I ended up buying it even though it had a couple of small issues (motor mounts and a few sticky parts).

 

Really depends on who built it and how well it was done. I've seen a lot of old school guys trusted with modern engines and they don't turn out so well.

But if it was a reputable shop and the outcome was good it could definitely be a plus for the car.

I'm up to 43k now and would't sell at 60k but that doesn't mean its worth 60k. 30k major done, tubi, stickies just completed, refreshed seats, and fabspeed headers, new motor mounts, rear shock refresh too. Agreed. I'm sure it took care of some known issues that the new owner will not have to worry about. Also demonstrates good maintenance practices on the part of the previous owner, IMO.

 

I've laid eyes on the car and I confirm that it's a 35K-40K car. People can ask what they want but that IS the value (retail ) of that car.
That is what is called a "stories" car. I suspect it has a lot of "stories" in its history.

If you don't want a 355 with a top end rebuild, you don't want a 355.

 

50 - 60K. I was offered 50K for my '95 F355 (well cared for) and it has 54K miles.

 

A valve guide replacement, though I'd want to know who did it , is a long way from a rebuild. This rebuild sounded extensive and there are only a few people that I consider qualified to do it in a way where it would be looked at as a value adding benefit. The factory being #3 on that list.

Other than the valve guide issue and the Cranks on some of the 97s , the 355 engine is Bullet proof and IMO is on par with a chev small block in terms of reliability and longevity.

Offered $50K on your car???... Haven't heard that one before...

 

Usually the heads are rebuilt at the same time as valve guide replacement. You have to disassemble the heads to remove the valve guides so it only makes sense to refresh the heads at the same time. I had my valve guides done by FoFL and they completely rebuilt both cylinder heads including replacing several valves. This is actually something you WANT when shopping for a 355.

 

With all due respect, a motor is not the space shuttle.....I'm certain our world has more than a few capable people that can perform a proper rebuild....

 

I agree, and, as I said Valve guides and seals etc.. are one thing and a value add where the 355 is concerned. A new engine from the factory is also a positive thing, (though would invite MORE questions from the buyer).

An engine rebuild , IN ANY CAR isn't an attractive feature in a car for sale let alone a 355.

I've gone through the valve guide issue on a 355 and replaced 2 valves among other things while in there. I had my Bike mechanic do it actually who even hand made the valves (well with his Shadow cnc machine). I would look at a engine that has been "cracked" differently than one that hasn't. Things seat, and wear a certain way.

 

I'm sure most would rather have a rebuilt engine with genuine Ferrari internals than have a "Bike Mechanic" fill their engine with homemade parts. Try selling that one to a potential buyer.

 

Why on earth would anyone make valves when you can buy valves for a reasonable price from any number of sources. When the heads on my 95 were done all the valves were replaces as a matter of routine, as were many of the tappets, each being checked to be within spec. Sometime it just gets deep around here.
