Fair price on a 95 355 GTB

I agree. I can't speak for Ferrari but I know GM valves are (or were) induction hardened and ground. Did the bike mechanic heat treat them in his home oven? Probably did not grind them...

 

The point is, that a rebuilt motor is not a value add proposition. And the car which is the subject of this thread is, IMO with the information provided and as an educated 355 owner, enthusiast and DIY mechanic with lots of hard learned experience a 35k - 40k car.

I do most of my own work on my cars. The tuning, machine work and certain other interior type work, I bring to professional people in the respective discipline who are absolute crafts people. The heads of a 355 are very similar to the heads of cafe race bikes. Infact, I believe Yamaha has been using the 5 valve set up more many many years. I know there are others.

When my genuine ferrari part... I.e. THE HEADS... Failed, the resulting damage required the machining of the heads, seats, etc... I actually ordered ferrari valves, and my bike mechanic, who happens to have been on factory engine building race teams, measured and weighed them. Each were out in both weight and seat angle. He decided to make new ones. Since he rebuilt the heads, the compression ratio increased beyond stock specs, the engine is smooth, reliable . If you came to this guys shop to ask to get work done, he would tell you to go f&@k your sister ( he's a bit cranky). And if you are one of the privileged few regular joes who could get him to do work for you, don't bug him about the time it takes or he will throw you out of his shop. He would shoot someone like Dave Rocks on site.

Eric, I will forgive your ignorance however, and I hope you are sitting for this but, ..... Shhh, I'll whisper,... ferrari doesn't build with the best parts all the time and they make comprises in places because they are in business and sorta mass produce their product...... Even if if is art to begin with.

To say that not using genuine ferrari parts is to say that all of the up market sellers products such as tubi, gruppe m, speed line, skunk works, capristo, etc, etc, etc, are inferior. Put a few more miles on and learn.

 

Valves are such a specialty item with everything from sodium filled, coatings to lightened hollowed parts to any number of treatments. The absolute last thing I would want would be someone making a homemade part to fit in my valvetrain. Sheesh!

So, following this and your other post, you bought 2 valves from Ferrari which were out of speck and your mechanic made 2 new ones. What about the other 38 OEM valves?

Your second statement doesn't surprise me now that I think about it. I'll speak slower next time.

 

I didn't replace all of the valves as you elected to do. What's the problem? He reseated all of the existing valves and made 2 new ones, yes from scratch. They were exhaust valves IIRC in the same cylinder. I have approx. 20,000k on the engine since.

 

It is pretty fun, isn't it.

Jesus, JohnK was driving everyone nuts for the two years when he was looking for his car, whining about the smallest detail, ( on a firano) for god sakes. DR, busted the balls of the dealership who sold him his car and they all of a sudden have no issue with a rebuilt motor on a 30K car?

These guys should be on a kids show.

Dude, what are you smoking? I bought both of my cars from private sellers. I bought my 98 close to 2 years ago and not a single person has touched or paid for anything on the car since then except me.
