I have a 2003 BMW 3-series. It is in excellent condition, except that 100,000 miles of high-speed highway driving have left the hood and bumper looking like crap. The rest of the paint looks brand new, and seeing the zillions of rock chips always pisses me off.

What is a reasonable price to pay to repaint the hood and bumper, at a quality shop? I will be very pissed if the color does not match.

Continental Auto Body in Portland, CT quoted me around $1,500, I think.

That is ridiculous, I think I got my M3 hood repainted for no more than $400-500.

Depending on color and the amount of prepwork that is required. $400 to $500 for a red, white or black would be okay. Go to the harder to match metallics and it goes up.

Hood and front fenders and bumper cover, about $800 would be good, depending on the color. Something hard to match will cost you more. White, black or red will definitely be slightly less. Do not scrimp on painting you car if you want to enjoy it. If it does not match you will kick yourself for not spending a few hundred more over the long term........

In some places you can buy a used hood painted and installed for $1,000. In other places you can pay $1,500 just for a few touchups and a respray of your own hood.

Look around town and see what the average is.

He said hood AND bumper, so I think the quote is actually close to correct. You could probably find a few hundred cheaper somewhere, but what's the quality difference.

F40 is one of the best body shops around in CT. I'd bring a 1960's Ferrari there, but I don't know that I would need that kind of work done on my daily driver BMW.

How good is your eye .. the color is not going to match 100% - they will have to blend.
