You'd think the current market would put a stop to anyone building something like the fake 328 mentioned in the article.

You can buy one with some minor body damage for $22K and fix it up a lot easier and cheaper than building any decent fake one from scratch.

Hey, Got to sayt I saw the news headline on the Italian TV news. What they are doing is something that has been done for a long time, though is illegal in Italy. In the US (Uk and other countries) there are several legit kit car conversions for Fieros into 308/328's and MR2's into 355's.

In Italy and France there are specifically strict laws to prevent the theft of design, as you'd expect in those two countries Design is a very important part of Intellectual property.

What the fakesters are doing is no more wrong than a kitcar maker does when he makes a replica car in the US and UK. They don't sell them as "real" Ferraris, but they are manufacturig replicas in a country where replicas are illegal...

The news became a "good strory" in the translation across the borders, in the true spirit of not letting the truth get in the way of a good news story.

I could drive up to North London and buy a replica AC Cobra, drive it to Italy and sell it and be as criminal as the guys busted on the article.

Incidentally, try the following next time you go through Paris Charles De Gaulle airport, walk up to a customs officer and confess your bag is a fake Louis Vuitton bag and see how you get treated - to a free lunch and stay at the Gendarmerie...

As for fake gear, do you know which country in the world imports and sells most countefeit designer gear in the world... Hint it has three letters in its acronym and all you need to do is to add an "S" in the place of the asterisk in the following riddle "U*A"....

I live 50km away from Italy and I am in italy at least 4 times each month and I never in my life saw a fake Ferrari.
However I saw one once in Austria it was really bad fake and when the guy flored it it was spinning front wheels. and it was a 4cilinder screamer. It was not sad it was beyond that i was laughing so much that I almost crashed my car.

My Italian friend I am a little surprised that you think Italians buy bogus knock offs, I found it to be quite the opposite especially in Italy. In fact the trend now is not to buy anything that is too designer they like more original or one of a kind items especially womens purses. Italians love quality hence Ferrari, Masarati, Lomborghini, Fiat, Gucci and the list goes on and on they want the best and settle for nothing less.

Of course there are always a few exceptions..;)

    Fratelli d'Italia, l'Italia s'è desta

    2) Dall'alpe a Sicilia, dovunque è Legnano;

    5) Uniamoci, uniamoci l'unione e l'amore
