Snoop got busted today. Yeah, I know, what else is new:
    http://www.tmz.com/2007/04/10/snoop-faces-felony-charges/

But read down in the article and you will see that one of the charges was "having a false compartment in a vehicle". What kind of a bogus charge is that??? I know what a false compartment is. Probably a hidden place to hide illegal things. But since when is it a crime to merely have a PLACE to hide things, even if there is nothing actually hidden there???

Is this some crazy Kalifornia law? And what is a FALSE compartment? What if I have a genuine REAL compartment that I MIGHT use to hide things,....is that LEGAL because the compartment is REAL instead of being FALSE?

And this all brings up a legal question that I have wondered about. What if some drug dealer has a small steel safe bolted inside the trunk of his car and he keeps his drugs inside the locked safe. Unless a police dog smells drugs on it, can the cops force you to open the safe? Can a judge issue a search warrant JUST BECAUSE the cops find a locked safe in your trunk? Or do they have to have a legitimate probabe cause to be looking in the safe?

My center counsel has a liner and it pops out, to revile a "hidden compartment. Well just empty space but you could put things down there and no one would find em. It came from the factory so I guess that would qualify as a real compartment that may be false.

    Here.

That is about an amendment to a current law, but I think it explains it all.

There is kind of a false compartment in the back of my vette if you take the license plate off between the impact foam and the fiberglass body piece. You could hide a lot of drugs back there. I always called it the Delorean compartment.

If you read the law it's only a false compartment if they find dope, guns or other illegal stuff in it. It also covers cash with the intent to buy illegal drugs etc. Otherwise if you were to put pics of your granny in their for ex., it's not illegal.

My 350Z has a false compartment I think. First off, the glove box is behind the passenger seat, not in front of it. Once you open the glovebox, it looks normal, but you can remove the floor of it. There's a little recessed area there to put stuff and I'm not sure why it was designed like that.

Also, you can remove the plastic panel behind the driver's seat. It's normally filled with a Bose subwoffer (sp?) on a higher trim model. It's a pretty big space (~2 feet wide, 1 foot tall, and about 2 feet deep).

All Dodge trucks have a storage under the middle of the front seat from the factory, would that be considered false compartment since it is hidden?

Please dont tell me you are all serious?

    Its with INTENT.

False compartment with an INTENT to deceive/hide/etc....

Anything from the factory is not INTENDED to deceive/hide/Etc....

As well Scott, that is not the law. That is an AB to the law to update it as other saw fit to get around the Health and Safety code that did exist.

I have a spot in my car but I don't "utilize" it. I have buddies that have multiple compartments who claim they use them, you'd be surprised at the amount of shops that are willing to do such a thing.......

Nope, Health and Safety Code Section 11366.8 is already law and deals with false compartments. How do you think they nailed Snoop with it?

My Ferrari has a secret compartment!

I stash my 100 octane in there, with intent of smoking it (and my tires).

Let's cut to the chase.... this is about money and the amount the State government wants.

If it's an AB/SB bill being introduced in California, it only has one purpose. It is intended to make sure that money is forced from the residents of California and into the hands of the State government.

One of the best things I've ever seen was a car that had a momentary switch- which activated a solenoid- and revealed a 9MM stashed under the passenger airbag cover.

Illinois law calls for impounding any car found to have a false compartment. Nothing in the code I read mentioned that the compartment had to contain anything illegal.

Welcome to Amerika! Where individuals are guilty until they can pay for their innocence. Hidden compartments are a presumption of guilt, you have one you must being doing something illegal. Have a fast car? then you were speeding.
