I was reluctant to announce the sale for fear I would hear what I already knew to be true. In Newman's own words, "You're crazy!" It is ironic that I find myself in very unfamiliar and surprising territory. I have come to rely on the advice of many here on FChat as I sort through the issues of Boxer ownership, yet I made this decision in the preverbial vacuum. Onno, you actually influenced me in some ways although you were unaware. And yes, as a purist, I prefer the original wheels. But driving with modern tire technology is a huge improvement for Boxers.

My BBi has exceeded my already inflated expectations of ownership. After the initial cosmetic clean up, engine out service (before me, the car was basically in storage and only driven 300 miles in 9+ years) and Sam Saprunoff's great fuse blocks, the car was almost disappointingly lacking any temperamental drama (tongue in cheek). Turn the key, it roars to life, get behind the wheel and the thrills abound. Mechanically and cosmetically the car has been impeccable.

It has been brewing for some time, and I came to the conclusion that I have an itch that hasn't been scratched. Throughout my very long search for a Boxer, my emotional focus was to find a 365BB while my more practical and visual preference was for a BBi. Besides an occasional "rescue" case, I never even cast eyes on a 365 example that suited me.

I am extremely fortunate, especially in today's economy, to have two dream "weekend" cars. But three would be completely impractical, and may even threaten my blissful union at home, lol! So I am willing to take a chance that a future owner who would appreciate my car might be looking at this time. In the unlikely event that happens, then I have the room to pursue other options. If no reasonable offers surface, I will be relieved to have my decision made for me and continue with what I always assumed would be lifelong ownership.

Heck, if I was really serious about selling, I would have asked Hudson to write my ad!

Setting a price was extremely difficult, and I chose one that I questioned as both too high on one hand and too low on another.

Jim, thanks for the kind words and I hope I see you tomorrow at C&C.

    William

Hey, that's very kind and nice to hear William. You're quite right, of course, modern tire technology does make a difference. Although, personally, I have not driven a Boxer with a non-original set-up yet, it would be interesting to find out. There is a recently restored 365 in Holland with wider tires (18081) who is a member of the Dutch Ferrari club (as am I). He doesn't know me, but hopefully, during next year, we can meet up and do a bit of a comparison. That would be really interesting.

Best of luck with the sale.

Well, just to get this brawl started, you could always keep you BBi to drive while your 365 in on fire.

And as far as writing your ad, thanks for the nod but I beleive you and your photos are doing a great job! Yet knowing how much you REALLY want to keep it, I'd be tempted to write an ad that would only ensure that outcome. Sticking in a comment like, "We don't think this car ever skidded sideways into a draw bridge on or near October 21, 2001 but aren't willing to explain the reference to 'jaws of life' on the CarFax report either." Stuff like that tends to quiet bidding.

On a half-way serious note, did you put in your listing that you'd trade for a 365? Stranger things have happened. Probably worth telling a broker/dealer or two also since there are some tax advantages to trading. (Please note: AHudson is not a tax advisor, attorney, or spiritual healer. All advice after this point is potentially illegal and almost certainly misguided.)

If you "trade" your car toward the 365 (meaning in one transaction) then your capital gains are absorbed in the"like/kind" exchange. Plus your sales tax willl only be on the "difference" between the two and only IF you pay up on the trade. (Please note: AHudson lives in Alabama where there are laws suggesting that if you trade a mule for a wagon of cotton, you should accept bourbon to make up any difference.)

It's not often that you can do this, but if you could save more than you had to pay the broker/dealer, seems worthwhile. Anyway, you probably knew all that. I'm just relieved we're not losing you from this fraternity of Boxer brethren, no matter the number on th tail. Best wishes.

    Good day William,

As Jim so eloquently put it, you are indeed a class act! Also, I do thank you for your kind words on my blocks, they are most appreciated!

As for your Ebay ad's description, I believe that you did an excellent job. I was most impressed with your writing style and it content! I wish I could write with such elegance.

At any rate, I wish you the best of luck with your sale... or... no-sale whichever you ultimately wish :)

    Cheers,

    Sam

    William,

I ran your spectacular BBi by a dear friend this morning, hoping that he would buy it. At least then, it would be nearby and I could occassionally sneak a ride in her when I got bored with my 365bb. Time will tell and best of luck with your pending sale...

    Regards,
    David

I think the stumbling block was a reserve sale and the 'Buy it Now" price at $169,000.
For most buyers the 169K buy it now = a reserve set at $168,500, which in the present economy is perceived as too much.

Very interesting, John. I have basically no background regarding eBay. I assumed that "buy it now" meant that a person expected to pay a premium for both eliminating competition and the chance that the item would sell for more than the "buy it now" price. I didn't know there was a perception that the buy it now price indicated the reserve. Now that the auction is over, I can tell you that my reserve wasn't $500 less, but tens of thousands less. It was the most disturbing thing about the whole ordeal. But I committed to letting the auction run its course.

I didn't want to speak too much about the auction until it was done, I guess there are some FChat rules regarding selling your car that I didn't want to break. I won't be renewing my listing. I think this selling thing is out of my system, no harm, no foul! Looking back I am laughing at what a wild hair that was.

This process really made me appreciate my Boxer, reminded me what it took to be in a position to buy it, and how much effort went into finding it. Newman, Peter, David, thanks for talking me down and all of your valuable input.

Kind comments from Adams, Jim S., Onno, Sam (the fuse block man), carsnxs are very much appreciated. I feel fortunate to have made some great friends via FChat.

Now, I am going out to the garage, warm up the Boxer and take a celebratory drive!

    Cheers all,
    William

I need to be reminded every once in a while how lucky I am to own a boxer (especially a BBi david lol). David and I had a conversation about this very subject not too long ago. We lose sight of how fortunate we are, it becomes a car to us at times but its so much more that that. No other car has given me chills or taken my breath away like a boxer does. I had it running today in the driveway surrounded by snow banks, the car looks amazing. Im glad you're keeping it william.

GROUP HUG! Yesterday I was down at my little building where my very lonely Boxer had been sitting under a cover for way too long. Thinking about this thread, I pulled the cover back, fired it up (first twist of the key, after 4 weeks) let it idle for about 10 minutes.

Just then, I was DELIGHTED my daughter called me that she needed me to take her somewhere RIGHT NOW. (She's 14 and plans things, like, 8 seconds in advance.)

She, I, and the Boxer took a great little ride, smiling the whole way. A joy to own these cars. William, happy reunion!

Well, William, in many ways this is great news!

If you are happy with the way it played out, and as you say got it out of your system, then that's a top result in my book. Enjoy her for as long as you can!

Good decision William. I done the same as you a few years ago with my fIrst Boxer, only I did not have to try to sell it, there was a buyer waiting for me to cave in, which I did, and regretted it so much I began looking for another before he had even collected the car from my house! Six months later i found a Boxer I was happy with. Very very special cars.
