I am doing the tourauto this year and have finally come to terms with knowing the basics on my dino and being able to do the stuff I can happily do with my "it won't kill me if this blows it up' alfa.

The fan belt looks like a complete b******d to remove - how the hell does one get to the bolt on the top of the alternator to remove and tension the belt ?

At least I have been educated that taking off the rear wheel and arch covers is a good place to start (and seems to be for pretty much everything incwater pump, distributor, oil filter.....)

Thnaks for your views as ever.

Its easy Richard once you get the inner rear wheel arch out the bolts are there in front of you!!! Actually you need flexible hands but it is do-able.

You need very long extension to loosen the bolt that adjusts the tension on alt. Then loosen the bolt on the bottom that mounts the alt to the block . This is all done under the car. Make sure the engine is cooled down since you will be working between all the ex pipes. The belt does not just fall on, usually you have to roll it onto the pulley, the water pump pulley is the easiest one to accomplish this.

while you are down there, it is worth checking/ confirming the alignment of the alternator pulley. Might save you another under the car trip in the near future :)
