Mine turns on automatically when the engine reaches a certain temperature. How is your fuse?

You can bypass the thermostat unit, and have the fan motor hard wired and starts when you turn on the ignition. I did it for the same reason. Also check to see if the fan blade spins easily. Mine did not, and I had to take out the little screw in front of the fan motor, spray WD 40 on the end of the rotating shaft, and the put the screw back, works great.

Two front fans turn on when the the aqua temps are straight up @ 12:00 on the guage, the yellow fan is for the a/c for further cooling during that operation, & I think it turns on right away when the compressor kicks in.

If I'm not mistaken, its dedicated to A/C operation (if memory serves me correct/couple of years ago).

The yellow fan on the engine side is operated by a thermo switch screwed into the bottom of the radiater, if you touch the two leads togeather ( it is a grouding switch, hard to find ground though) and the fan works with ignition on, switch is inop. about $49.00. There are also realays under the pass. foot board. Same part # on the head light relays so you can do a switch to check the fan one.
The two fans in front of the rad. come on as soon as you switch on the a/c. Those fans are made in England and were used on the J. XKE. I found them cheaper through GT cars for Ferrari than Moss motors for a british car. Good luck

I have never seen anything above 90C water temp. in my car in all kinds of driving, including the weekend traffic jam around Wash. DC. At 80+ mph the oil gets to about 105C but it is much cooler in traffic. I use a coolant additive but I am sure that is not miracle fix just a couple of degrees of insurance.

I was surprised to hear some people running hot with their 400's.

NAPA has the Veglia switch available in several temps..I personally use the 160 degree one just because I don't trust ANY switch to come on until it's past its stated temp...also it now comes with its own dedicated female GM type connector already attached$16-20) with the matching male connector available ($3-$4) that can be used by clamping on to spade connectors to match the car's existing leads..What an improvement..I have found that if the change over to the new switch is done when the coolant is cold and the new threads are wrapped with tephlon tape..this whole operation takes about 3-5 minutes and loosing about a cup to a pint of coolant and with no need to "burp" (blead) the system because you have'nt let any air into the system..love those GM connectors..because this is the perfect time and place to add a manual overide switch..Jacques

Double check the fuse. Sometimes even if it looks good, the contact is not made. So give the fuse a little spin.

    Nice clean engine.
