Okay. I pulled the two wires of the radiator fab switch and touch time together. I hear the relay click and no fans. Nice little zap though..

Next I leave them unplugged and turn on the ac. Both fans fire right up. Anyone have any ideas?

There is probably a secondary circuit to run the fans when the AC is on. When not, the fans need the temp sensor and relays to run the fan.

Right. Makes sense. I have been told when you touch the rad temp sensor wires together can should come on but it doesn't. So where does the fault happen?

Are there 2 fans? Do you have continutiy betwen the sensor leads and the fan or relay?

Yes two fans. Haven't checked it with multimeter yet. To be honest not sure where the relays are. Kind of a noob

I recommend two things. First check for voltage and ground at the fan. Second confirm the fan operates via bench test or swap with second fan if they are the same make and model

Even if they both run fine with ac? They clearly work

There are two relays on the fuse panel that control cooling fan function. If you are looking at the fuse panel inside the engine compartment (behind the battery) towards the rear of the car, there are three relays at the bottom of the board. The 4 connector CEAM relay on the right is the main power relay. It powers up the right fuse-box when the ignition switch is turned on (the top 4 fuses).

The middle Lucas relay is the cooling fan relay, and is controlled by the temperature switch at the bottom of the radiator. It turns on both cooling fans when the temperature switch closes. The CEAM relay on the left with 5 connectors is the right cooling fan change-over relay. It turns on the right cooling fan when the A/C compressor clutch is energized. It also supplies power to the right cooling fan when the A/C is off, but when the center Lucas cooling fan relay is energized.

From the description of your problems, it sounds like someone had wired the relays incorrectly. Both the CEAM and Lucas relays are easy to open up and clean the contacts, but I see them replaced with non-original relays all the time. The best thing to do is get a wiring diagram, have it blown up to a size so that you can read it easily, and start tracing wires to the relays to see what is wrong.

I recomemdend the fan swap as some models have multiple inputs for cooling and constant on when running AC

Both fans work fine with the A/C on. That means the fans and wiring to the fans is fine. He just has to correct the wiring at the the two relays on the fuse board as I explained in the last post.

Yes. Fans are all set. Had to remove the orginal relay and instal a late model relay. Th erelay was working intermitteantly. Now the problem is solved.
