I know that last year F-Chat used F1tipping.com for fantasy F1. Will F-Chat be using the same website for the 2005 season? If not, which service will be used? Will there be an F-Chat group?
    Thanks

Ryan, I did that for a while, but lost interest in the format. I was wondering if anyone would like to do just an FChat league, perhaps with a draft format? Another possibility that my friends and I have done in the past is this: you pick a driver for each race, but you can only use him once all season. Requires a little strategy that way. Let me know what you think...

I agree, the format of F1tipping.com is average at best. I'm sure that there are other fantasy formats for F1 out there. I would definitely be interested in some alternative league. If there is not a league out there then I would settle for an F-Chat F1tipping group. I am just curious as to how the group and format would be organized. I'm going to check online in the next couple of days for the best solution. A drafting idea would be a good idea like Jack had posted earlier. Any other idea out there?

I would like to participate in that. Last year's tipping was about as interesting as the races themselves: Just put Michael on first and you're done.

Well, let me ask what type format you guys prefer:

The first would be a budgetary game where you assign values to cars, drivers, tires and any other variables you can think of and set a budget. Each player spends his/her budget however they wish to form a team, and accumulate points accordingly.

Another way to do it is auction style, just like a lot of NCAA pools, where you bid for drivers and pay out at season's end, say 60%, 30%, 10%. This allows mid-season trading and/or selling of drivers, which could be interesting. An advantage to this format is, if there are a lot of people interested, you can form "syndicates", or teams. I think in the interest of economics, it would be smart to set a spending cap on each syndicate.

A third option is the one where each week, every player selects whichever driver they want for that race. You are only allowed to select each driver once, so you need to look ahead a bit and strategize some. We've done this at work and it's fun. It allows unlimited entries as well.

Any other ideas? Let me know.

    Option 3.
I don't want to turn this into a major scientific exercise. Heck I was too lazy in the past to look up historical records for my bets. Also option 3 sounds a lot like we played it on FChat in 2003 which I thought was a lot more fun than last year.

That works for me. Now, we need to start the recruiting process. And, should we try to solicit prizes, or is braggin' rights enough?

I'd be game. As far as prizes, maybe the winner of each race would get a T-shirt, and the "champion" at the end (or when garners enough points to win) get's a Champion T shirt, or something like that. Maybe?

Bragging rights on FChat to your fellow F1 fans: priceless

Seriously I throw in an original VHS or DVD movie for the winner. Movie is Ferrari related of course.

Okay, then. Let's say that here and now, it has been decided. The F1 Racing Pool Contest will be in the following format:

1)Each contestant will select a driver no later than the Thursday prior to a race meeting.

2)Points are won based on the driver's performance in the race.

3)A driver may only be chosen ONCE over the course of the season. If he is replaced for any reason, you must accept his replacement. If a driver you have already picked is replaced during the season, you may NOT re-use that car. The new driver is also considered used. Bottom line is, you can only use a driver and/or chassis once.

4)In the event of a tie at the end, the tie-breaker will be number of wins, followed by number of second place finishes, etc.

I will offer to run the pool, unless there's someone out there that really feels like doing stuff like this. If you wish to join, please email me at [email protected] with "F1 Pool" or something like that in the subject line. This way I won't think it's junkmail or a virus and delete it. I'll send a reply "confirmed" so you know I received it. So, for now, if you can think of any other situations that should be pre-sorted, please ask.

I think it is a great idea. I just think that we need to put some rules. I too route for Michael but we should say for example that you cannot present the same finish line as the week before or something of that genre.

I just think it would make it more interesting or somebody during the all season could say:

    M. Schuemaker
    R. Barrichello
    XXXXXXXXXXX

and for the last season for the first 5 races he would have won big time.

    Just a thought.

I think the rule is that you cannot name the same driver twice in a season.

That's too restrictive or we'll end up with Heidfeld and Pantano on our tips.

The rule should be: You cannot name the same driver twice in a season on the same spot.

So you could put Schumacher in one race on first, in one on 2nd and in one on 3rd.

BTW: What are we bidding on? Only the race results or qualifying also and for how many places? I'd say keep it simple at the top three for the race.

I'm not doing anything that isn't 100% automated. I doubt anyone would want to take that responsibility either. I also don't think something easy like drafting before the first race would work because we wouldn't stay active throughout the year.

Has anyone looked around to find something better than F1tipping.com? Has anyone looked to see if they're even doing it again or maybe if they've added some new features?

I thought the software was very well designed and I liked the risk factors with picking quienllea or trifecta, but I think last year was boring as much as Ferraris domination as the game format.

All right. We need a timeout here. You pick a driver. Whatever points he scores in the race, you receive. That driver and his car are no longer available to you for the remainder of the season. You aren't selecting any finishing order or anything like that. Just one driver for each race. It's remarkably simple to keep track of, and like I said, I'll offer to do it unless someone else feels a real need to do it. It really doesn't matter how many guys enter, since it's pretty much straight forward addition. I know, I know. Famous last words. But if you guys prefer something else, no problemo here:)

Whatever, I'm still going to look around at various online leagues. To me 100 people will still be a pain in the butt even picking just one driver a race. That's up to you though.

    Me likey!

Very simple and straight forward. No pain to keep track off and no pain for participants to bid and check results. I hated last year's sign up. That website was a mess just trying to figure out where one stood, let alone all the hocuspocus of bidding with Trifecta etc.

One man, one race, that's the ticket.

Am I the only one who liked last year's format ?
I thought it was interesting trying to work out the connotations - having said that, I'll play whatever you decide :)

Well, this thing's kind of died on the vine, so unless people rally a little closer to the opener, it's no-go for now.

Yes, we'll do the same thing as last year unless someone else sends me a link to a league better. I don't care if a user wants to run their own rules and compile manually, but I think you are on crack considering how much time it will take for 100 users maybe. Not as much picking everything once for the year, but that is still at least 100 back and forth communications. Now if you do it every race times 100 by 15(?).

Last years was ok with me, I just think it will be tough to run a pool of our own.

As it stands, we are still registered on the f1tipping site and I have already pick for the first race.

If all decides to do something else, I will come along.

    best regards, jim
