I wish to make an unsolicited unabashed recommendation for Fastenal. I needed a U-Spring Nut for my door panel having lost one. None at the local Ace so went to Fastenal where this particular fastener is only available in a box of 150 but they had none. They special ordered the part, broke the box and sold me 5 for near nothing.

I've never seen them recommended in this forum as a source of metric parts and am fortunate to have a store nearby. Fastenal has 2000+ stores but as construction/manufacturing suppliers, aren't generaly considered a retail store because of their Mon-Fri 9-5 hours. But they have McMaster-Carr like inventory and the flexibility to have bailed me out several times.

I'm not pushing their store so much as providing awareness of an oft overlooked source of hardware that just may be near you.

Sounds like great service. Let the manager know you have made an effort to rave about their service. Cultivating a source like this will benefit you both.
Reminds me of a short story about a contractor that said his wife was always reminding him that his business was promoted by word-of-mouth, mostly, his.

    Have you got a website??

    Thanks for the referral,
    chris

I've bought hardware from them many times.

Typically the guy working there is an idiot so you need to know exactly what you are looking for.

Easily the best deal in town for Grade 8 fine thread stuff.

    Ahhhh Fastenal.

Each shop is independently managed and has a LOT of leeway from the HQ on how they act, even what their prices are.

I have one local Fastenal that is great near where our old office is/was. I could call and get good prices on parts and send someone over to get them same day. Then we moved. The new one is run by morons. Their prices are 50% higher on almost everything - a 5-gallon pail of machine coolant is $199 when it used to be $120 at the old place. They also don't give a crap if they order the wrong thing - even if we're holding production waiting for it.

Not to bag on Fastenal - actually just reinforcing the point that if you found a good guy at your local Fastenal, support him - let his manager or the corporate people know he's good and go to him when you need stuff... because the next guy or another Fastenal location may be a TOTALLY different experience :)
