Okay inspired by the What's the highest speed you have ever been in your Ferrari? thread, I was hoping we could have a fun thread about stories about working Dad's car hard and ofcourse the poor little rental car.

I've classic raced a couple of my Dad's cars ... but I also used to get parts for his business during school holidays (and other helping out stuff) and I remember having his shop ute absolutely flat out (without rev counter) at around 100 mph. What was most amazing though, and annoying for the then 16 year old PSk, was I was passed by a PETROL tanker truck ... WTF!

Also the first time I topped 100 mph was naturally in one of my parents cars ... hehe. The funny thing about this story was my Mum used this car to go to golf the next day and came home complaining about the car misfiring, and she had to rev it harder than normal before it would clear its throat. Er, I guess that little work out gave it a fright ;) :) ... Sorry Mum and Dad

As for rental cars, there is a little Toyota Corolla in NZ that had a lovely abusive day. Man those things can rev ... :D

Anyway, I'm sure you guys have much better stories ... hehe.

    Pete

I'm not into flogging company vehicles, as some of them stay together by the grace of God... Now, I had a good time with my Aunt's '03 Dodge Stratus. "I don't think it's running right, will you take it for a test drive"? Uh...sure, no problem :D. Those little 2.7L Chrysler V6's will rev and rev and rev! 6800 RPM or some crap like that. Try that with your Taurus/Malibu.

An exceptionally good time was had by yours truly when offered the keys to a 1974 MG Midget. Too bad I couldn't drive a manual at the time...

Never any real high speed excursions involving other people's cars though. In high school I enjoyed driving my dad's Dodge Dakota pickup truck, not because it was faster than my car, but because it was rear wheel drive. If he only knew. Or maybe he does...:)

If you ever have a car from an Avis lot at an air port and once above 20mph you have a horrendouse bouce and vibration of the car, you can thank me for flat spotting as many as of the tires I could on the car. Everything from yanking the parking brake in an empty parking lot at speed (I have watched too many BMW films) to just dragging the rear wheels (the e-brake is up) and just flooring it on a front wheel drive car and dragging the rear wheels sliding the car back and forth. Many road excursions also have been had down some dirt roads I came across pretending I was the next ralley champion.

Some say it is bad to treat rental cars this way, but I have actually learned alot by doing this. No one wants to beat their own car, so a rental is perfect in figuring out how a car rotates when certain manuevers are pulled or how a car reacts on dirt and gravel as compared to pavement. So I just want to thank all the rental car companies for allowing to me progress my driving skill.

I had a company Corolla for a time; on several occasions when it was raining I went down to the parking lot of a large factory (one of these 40 acres of pavement places) and spent a little while learning how to control slides and skids in the rain. Also how to do e-brake turns and 180 turns, but that's a different story. But getting used to the feel of a car *right* at the grip limit and when it loses grip was a great learning experience. The last generation of Corollas were also governed at 104mph. So I've heard.

As for a rental, about 92mph in a Mitsubishi Mirage. What was more impressive was the fact it made Boston to Newark, NJ on less than $10 in gas (filled up in Boston before leaving, filled up at airport to drop off).

My dad had a '55 Chevy with a 2 speed powerglide automatic transmission/283 V8 with a 2 bbl carb. I used to put that car in neutral, rev it about as far as it would go and then drop it into 1st to make the tires squeal. I am surprised I did not blow the engine, tranny, or both. The car sure shook when I did it. BTW, I got my drivers license at 14 (Texas) so I guess I was not very mature about the whole thing. If my son did that...........

My dads car -------about 110 mph
    Moms Chevy Caprice-----about 100 mph
Friends Buick G/S stage III----120 mph
    Friends front engine B/Gas dragster(in 1966)---148 mph
    Friends McLaren F1------------175 mph!!!!!!!in 4th gear----------------

This all sounds pretty weak except the Mclaren one. Aren't there any Risky Business type stories out there?

My mother (yes, mother) has had 5 Porsches, but now drives a Mercedes. When I was working for the local Porsche dealer, I had the good fortune of being her service valet. I would take the car in for its regular servicing and any toher repairs. Of course, I felt obligated to thoroughly road test the car after each service. One such road test in her 1989 Carrera 4, while she was out of town of course, ended up being quite extended, and at about 2:00 AM on a quiet four lane highway in Illinois, I found my self passing the 160mph mark on the speedo. At about 162, I backed off, as it was very, very dark, and the thought of meeting a stray deer or other forest creature at that speed did not appeal to me.

Years later, my mother and I were reminiscing about her old cars, and the question came up of how fast either of us had ever been in the car. She wasn't too thrilled to find out I had seen a significantly higher figure than she had.

235Km/hr in my dad's M5. I didn't want my dad to find out as he would have killed me. But he did.......
The only reason im alive right now is because he was smiling when he overtook me doing 270km/hr in his GT3. Not fair!
Aparently he followed me knowing what i was going to do!! Bastard!
Too bad i just took over his business! Sucker!

I am lamer than everyone else!! LMAO
dad's car? pfff 140km/h in the Intrepid and perhaps 130 in the xk8. For some reason, the Jag reaches that speed much faster ... LMAO
Rental ... must have been in the 90-100mph in a Trailblazer.

Only place I really let it out is out on the track ... and on the dirtbike. No pigs to bother me, and the higher the better. :D

Many years ago, I was in a rental piece of crap as I came over the Lolo pass outside of Missolua, Montana. Right as I creasted, two old bikers pulled out doing the "ride into town" boggie on a couple of old style bobbers. I don't know how fast we ended up going because I was too busy trying to keep that bland econo box on the road. The bikes where splipping and a sliding. At each corner, they would shoot up sparks from grounding the bikes. By the time we got to the bottom, the rental junk cage felt like it was ready to fall to pieces, and there was the unmistakable smell of cooked brakes. I brought the two bikers a beer after they pulled into a road house just to thank them for leading the way.

I had a friend that used to rent cars just to thrash them and get his jollies out. As a jerk off 20 yr old I thought it was great fun...unfortunately I grew up and he didnt.

when my dad started working from home, and my car not being road legal i got to use his car all the time. mostly worked nights, fastest i've had it was 148mph (didnt go further, bmw rates its topspeed rates it at 148. speedo read just under 160). on a spirited run on a b-road i've drained a quart of the 80 litre tank in 10 minutes. can be quite easy in normal petrol cars but this was a diesel. a heavy one but still (bmw 730ld).
