Well, I'm not fat, but I still read it :D

If this guy is a movie director, then why isn't he taking a private plane?

Kevin Smith is a pretty down to earth guy...plus in my experience only the highest level directors make enough to afford private planes (unless the studio is wooing them for something and covers it)

Kevin is a big guy but he's not too big to fit in one of those seats. He's not much bigger than me and I fit just fine. Someone had it out for him.

They should have simply asked him to buy two tickets so he had the area of two seats to fill, problem solved.

I think he changed flights and there was only one seat available. He says he got the arm rest down. So what. I have been in that istuation where even with the arm rest down, my seat was half filled. Makes for a repulsive trip for one person. I am glad Southwest enforced their policy. I wish others would as well.

Amen. If I pay for a seat, I shouldn't have to give half of it to someone else.

I'm going to have to agree, fat people need to buy two seats if they extend beyond the armrest.
I will never forget the time I had to sit between two smelly guys like that on a 2 hour flight. I am 6'8" and athletic so it was worst case scenario. I politely begged the attendant for a different seat but the flight was booked solid and she was unable to find someone willing to sit there. I almost got off the plane. It was like being molested publicly for two hours. I filed a complaint and the airline took care of my next ticket.

Kevin Smith did buy two seats for a later flight, but was trying to get on an earlier flight (as a standby passenger) with only one open seat. He acknowledged his need for two seats when he made the purchase, so I don't think the airline was in the wrong here. Maybe he just saw an opportunity to get his name in the media.

He should be happy he wasn't on a european budget airline...those seats are smaller than anything! I'm not THAT fat (only 25 pounds overweight) and I barely fit in them...worst is that I always sit by the exit because of my legs and the side bit thingy doesn't go up:(.

I sat next a fat chick and a woman with lepra who was crying all the time last time I was on a plane. I'm an inch taller than you, and this was an african airline (probably even less space than the european airlines!) so I could barely move. As soon as we were in the air the fatter one went to have a **** on the toilet or something, so I grabbed my chance and went somewhere else. I wouldn't care if I had to stand up for the rest of the flight, no way I was sitting back down again. There where 13 (!!) free places in business class and I was denied, there was one friendly israeli girl sitting in business and she overheard the conversation and she said it would be fine if I went to sit there. No luck though, but luckily I could use the exit seat because it was occupied by a small child, who was asleep and the mother took him in his arms.

I was still pissed though because miss Israel was HOT! ;)

perhaps his work isnt very good and/or profitable and hence cant "afford" it.

Airlines have had this policy for several years now. Whats the big deal? Is it because he's on the fringe of being a celeb?

had it been someone w/ some talent like Quentin Tarantino, then things would be different! ;)

While I agree it is not fair for fat people to consume seats next to them that they haven't paid for, the situation is largely precipitated by the airlines making the seats smaller and smaller.

I am 6'3" and 235lbs and I have broad shoulders. Sitting in the seat, my shoulders are wider than the seat. That's bone, not fat :D. Granted, I am on the upper end of physical size (not including fat), but I'm not freakishly big - and I don't come close to fitting in the seats - and my knees are firmly jammed into the seat in front of me too, and I have to keep my knees open and in the space between seats to fit in the first place.

Now, it is true that tall and well built men are significantly more attractive to the opposite sex than shrimpy halfpints of under 6-feet, but is our enhanced desirability to women really enough reason to penalize us on planes?

So while it is true that taller and better built men get more women, make more money, and have better lives over all than lesser men, we do get totally screwed on the airplane deal.

I just saw some recent pics of him...he has become HUGE. i wasnt expecting it...i figured he was about my size.

There is no way he can fit in a single seat. This was justified

Based on this I should be wealthy enough to afford private jet rides. After all the rest is true:D.

    Airline's fault.

He had bought two tickets for the later flight, which means he acknowledged the policy. He enters into Standby, telling them he has bought two seats. One seat becomes available. Airline's left hand thinks he's fine, puts him on the plane. Right hand disagrees and boots him off. Hilarity ensues.
