While all posts above have merit does the white truck have vicarious liability? I have seen morons drive as slow as possible with a 10 car deep line. They do this for sport. Hey let's see if I can go slow enough to get a 20 car line? This enrages people and clear heads do not prevail. Have you ever passed a slow car like the truck only to have him accelerate to screw with you? I'm sure everyone has. Maybe in a ferrari considering how slow Truck going you can easily pop out and pass? I'm not justifying the outcome I'm just saying what was the white truck doing? Is he innocent or the creator of the problem?

This video has no relevance with the Nürburgring. The Nürburgring is firstly a one way circuit, with no traffic coming the other way. It also has safety barriers, an electronic and human corner by corner flag system, and safety teams nearby on standby during every public or private session.

Agree with all this. Tragic and stupid at the same time.

Just had a thought, imagine all those sitting there witness to watching those people burn alive and there was nothing they could do to help save them.

Most of those people that witnessed this will have trouble sleeping at night I reckon.

    Very sad.

Portofino has 600+ hp. I can't imagine organizing a driving tour and putting absolute novices who have no experience with that kind of power behind the wheel and sending them off with each other on narrow two-lane roads. I'm all for people having fun behind the wheel but I wouldn't toss the keys to a 600hp sports car to some guy who DD's a Volvo and say hey, have a bottle of red at lunch and go have some fun. Epic stupidity.

I do not feel sorry for anyone in the group. I saw the video. I also saw stupidity and immaturity. You are renting a supercar. You drive unnecessarily dangerously on a public narrow tight road. So much of other vehicle movements. Yet they chose to do something stupid. Both Ferrari and Lambo.

    Let this be a lesson.

This is sick. Way way down the stupidity mountain is the "Bad Vibe & stink" these events contribute to Ferrari ownership !
Anybody in any car, that drove like this would be dead. Probably 1/2 a dozen events happened since this post.
But, the Ferrari gets the undeserved attention. !

    Very Sad Indeed….. RIP!

Adrenaline clearly took over and a very bad decision was made.

Whilst the blue Lambo was driving like a dhead….. especially how he nearly clipped the motorcycle prior to the accident.

I have to say that it is 100% the red Ferrari’s fault as if he had not have been there then there would not have been an accident.

The blue Lambo was also still in attack mode and over the white line…. Which makes me shake my head at why the Ferrari thought he needed to even attempt such a stupid move.

You misunderstood me; I was referring ONLY to my personal rule of never racing non professionals in ANY circumstances ANYWHERE. Doing so leads to such idiotic and tragic accidents.

I used to race semi professionally in the UK and have also done many laps of the Nordschleife (the Ferrari history of which I covered in a Cavallino article in issue 93, June 1996 so I am familiar with it thank you); the general public doing laps there is often dangerous, incompetent. On the road I never get into any dicing with others because you don't know their competence level.
Here in Burgundy there are hundreds of miles of fantastic twisty hilly roads almost entirely traffic free, a driver's paradise, I enjoy them avidly but I never engage with anyone wanting to compete.

I do not know the exact traffic rules in Italy, but they will not be dramatically different from the Netherlands where I live (both EU countries).

While the moral responsibility for this terrible accident is for the Ferrari driver, the legal responsibility would be for the Lambo driver since he started an overtaking maneuver while already being overtaken himself. Basic rule (at least in the Netherlands) is that you keep your lane while being overtaken. If you fail to do so, any subsequent accident will be blamed on you. All other facts (Ferrari driver trying to overtake two cars in a silly way, probably speeding, overtaking not allowed on this section of the road) would be irrelevant for the legal responsibility.

Portofino has pretty good rollover protection. All convertibles do, these days. If they were strapped in, it's quite possible they would have been alive, relatively well protected, when the car flipped and before the fire took hold.

Again a modern Ferrari that caught fire. If both victims survived the impact of the accident but died because of the fire, what are the consequences for Ferrari as actual manufacturer of the car?

    Spot on, exactly my point.

It takes two to tango and yes the Cali driver was at fault in many ways but the trigger was the Lambo driver not looking in his mirrors and causing the collision.

The Ferrari driver was almost 100% at fault here…..instead of waiting for their turn to pass the truck as a sensible driver would, he decided to go for a F&F style illegal multiple pass putting a dozen lives at risk because he was too damn stupid to wait.

If you think this driving was scary and reckless try driving the hills above Split In Croatia, the trucks make moves like that approaching blind bends at every opportunity.

Most terrifying drive of my life in a slow old landrover and I had to do it most weeks for a few months.

White truck driver is not at fault----period all on the Ferrari driver in my opinion trying to squeeze around the Lambo causing the entire accident.

My gut feeling is that, to the extent that this happens (I haven't really seen it), it's likely more of a US phenomenon.
