my father backed into my red '88 328 with 24k miles on it today...oops... dented the drivers side door and a little on the panel above the tire... nothing major, but noticable.

do i need a specialist/ferrari body shop to fix this or can i fix it locally with a friend/body shop owner who's been in business 30+ years? will it affect the value?? is this type thing reported to carfax??

is it a good time to paint the entire car?? it's otherwise in excellent shape. Hoping to fix it right with minimal embarassment to dad, so hopefully it won't be much of an issue since it's minimal damage.

it's a little bit of a bummer, but what can I say... I feel more badly for my dad on Father's Day. Your input is greatly appreciated... maybe this type of thing is bound to happen the older a car gets... just trying to figure out what to do...thanks

If you do turn it in to your insurance, I'd document it w / pictures. So when you do sell it , if ever , it 'll be explained.

I am not sure it is something to be taken lightly. Remember the car came with arguably a $20,000 dollar paint job. I would take it to someone that specializes in Ferraris because they will know how to treat this type of paint job. I just spent a fortune on a detail that most people would spend on painting an entire car. JJ

If the rest of the paint is in good shape, wouldn't think it would be necessary for a complete repaint, but keep in mind, to fix the area above the tire most likely will mean a respray of the whole front clip and "A" pilars (execpt the front bonnet & bumper) as there are no seams for which to stop the paint. As far as who does the work, ask yourself if you plan on keeping it or is a resale in the future. If you plan to keep it and don't care about resale then have your local guy do the work, but if you are worried about the resale then it's best to have a good quality shop do the work. My guess is that a shop with Ferrari/ high end car experience, it would cost about $3,500. Thats $2,500 for the front clip work and $1,000 for the door. If you pay out of pocket and don't report it, then carfax won't know, if it's reported to the insurance, then they will.

Not so sure that this car has "Lacquer" paint on it. It may very well be a base coat/clear coat system. And yes, the paint job at $20K is arguably wrong.

In seeking your repair, it does not neccessarily require someone who specializes in Ferraris to provide a quality repare, just make sure the shop is capable of, and has a reputation for turning out hight quality work. You may even want to seek out someone who does "street rod" or paints custom Harley's.. These guys tend be very meticulous about thier work as its usually thier reputation.

Not a sermon, just a thought!
