While going on a drive with a passenger in my 458 spider whenever we would hit a dip in the road that would compress the suspension and then have it go light there would be a chime and the dash would show a message saying passenger airbag. It happened several times during the drive. Took the car to the dealer and after inspection the code was for the passenger seat baby smart module. They came back saying that because the car has the carbon buckets, they are not able to simply order the module and need to order a full replacement seat at a cost of $30,000!

this sounds insane. Is there no way to deactivate this or find some other solution?

I had a same issue ..ended up bought whole new seats from Ferrari and took 13 painful months to get them. Check out my post on the link above.

Ferrari won’t sell you just only the sensor so I was trying to fix it myself and bought a brand new sensor(it’s from standard-seat) but ended up the plug from new sensor won’t fit the connectors under the carpet so I have to return the part and placed the order for whole new seats

Awesome, thank you so much. One last question: did you install the sensor in the seat and remove the bad one or did you just plug the new one in and leave it tucked under the seat?

Just left it under for now. It’s taped down to the floor. It’s just one plug really easy. Will have to do the install but got lazy to pull the seat out.

See if Qavion can figure out the wiring for the CPOD and perhaps something like this could be adapted, spliced in the plug wire etc. to bypass the pressure sensor. Just a thought for a possibility for this insane problem, Good luck. Maybe you can call the manufacturer and they can configure it for the 458. Maybe something like this could be rigged to work. Several are on Ebay. It basically bypasses the sensor if I understand it right. This will probably be the next thing I'll have to deal with on the 458 so I hope you find a solution.

I don't understand your Dealers reply as it certainly should be part of a "Safety" issue thus warranted . Didn't we just a yr. or so ago undergo a Ferrari recall for safety issue with passenger air bag issues.

As far as I know, Ferrari have not acknowledged this problem as widespread and issued a specific recall for this. Is there a policy I am not aware of that anything deemed “safety issue“ but not affecting potentially every car as would a manufacturer defect must be corrected under warranty regardless of vehicle age?

If not, then the dealer is just replacing a faulty part as per factory instructions. The dealer isn’t trying to screw me. They are simply following Ferrari protocol. In this case, I think Ferrari made a ****ty design choice never thinking that these sensors could go bad and it would mean replacing the entire carbon bucket at an exorbitant and unnecessary cost.

part arrived today. Switching it out early next week. When you taped it to the floor, did you maintain it spread out or did you fold or make it a smaller footprint somehow?

Airbag manufacturer liability laws are the reason, not a poor design decision

That was quick where did you get it and how much? I have a set of Pista seats and they dont have the Cpod in them.

I did spread mine out and tape it to the floor, but I didnt get to test a child seat...car got sold.

I didn’t mean that including the sensors was the design flaw. Having the seats designed in such a way that this part is not replaceable is the flaw in my opinion. It can be avoided. Even if the seats are outsourced to a supplier, the other seat options available show that it can be designed in a way where this part is replaceable. so again, poor designed decision

The part is easily replaceable, but airbag liability issues won’t allow it

it’s easily replaceable, even through the dealership in the standard bucket seats. And there is no airbag liability issue with those seats.

so clearly it can be done if they had taken it into consideration for the carbon race seats. But if the dealer won’t even sell you the part or perform the service because Ferrari doesn’t allow it, how is that considered “easily replaceable“?

Todd, we've been here a few times before. Do not insult other members when they don't agree with you. 3-day ban.

Simon, this is the first time so it's a warning only. Next time, please just report the post and then ignore it to avoid muddying the waters and assuming some fault in a tit-for-tat.

    All the best,
    Andrew.
