This was my first time at Laguna Seca. This was without a doubt the best time of my life behind the wheel. Thanks to Adam Cox and Key of Ace Motorsports. I hired them to haul my cars up there and provide support. They did all that and then some. Thanks again guys! What an incredible experience and thanks to everyone that was running out there for keeping safe and showing respect to one another.. and of course thanks to all of the behind the scenes people and volunteers that made this happen.

We had two fantastic days. I got over 90 laps out there according to my Harrys Lap Timer.

This was the first run session of the first day. The 308 I'm chasing had a modified Carobu 3.5L. The owner told me she was making over 300 hp with carbs. It was awesome to run with 308's, GT4's, older cars, and newer cars. Thanks again to all of you!

Will post more sessions as I have time to upload them. The last session of the second day I had a great time dicing with PenP and his modified GT4. I think there were only four of us out there at that point!

    Cheers all!

Great video and I am so bummed I didn't go to this now, but my car would need so much more done to be really safe on the track. A couple things:

    1. You had great lines!
    2. Age and power in the car doesn't matter - how you drive it does - good show!
    3. You prepared - most important. What did you / they do?
    4. Best track day investments are lessons, brake pads and good tires
    5. Analytics - Harry's lap timer is so cool - do you have any video from this or analytics that you can share?

Great to see you up on the new cars!

    Thanks for the compliments gents!

Mike we didn't make it to CI. We didn't head up until Sunday. I was still doing some engine mapping in the pleasant 100 degree heat wave we were having all the way thru Saturday evening! I had just put my Hayubusa throttle body setup on this engine a few weeks before. There's still some tweeking and fine tuning to be done but she has more torque everywhere (thus more hp) than with the plenum EFI setup I had been running for almost 10 years. I had put that EFI setup on my dry sump converted car (which also has the early carb cams and actually pulls even harder than this car, but little in the way of suspension tweeks) so I was committed to getting the busa throttle bodies working on this beast. It all worked out awesome.

    To respond to this:

    1. Thank you! Years of autocrossing helps with that, especially at the venue we've been able to autocross at ... very big parking lot with lots of 3rd gear redline!
    2. Yes ... the age of the driver is starting to play its part though :(
    3. I did most of the prep, but once we were there they took care of EVERYTHING! They pulled wheels off every couple of sessions to check suspension bits and would've played with alignment and ride heights were it necessary... but it wasn't :). They flushed my brakes with some pimpy Castrol brake fluid and really gave me tons of mental and moral support. They bled brakes every few sessions but I really don't even think that was necessary. I was hardly using them ... was driving a lot more conservative than I do at autocross. One of the guys said he could touch my rotors when I came in so I should step it up a bit ;).
    4. Yes, yes and yes ... I had also repacked 1/4lb of grease in the front wheel bearings. I had never forced that much in there but noticed that quantity spec in the manual.
    5. Yes will post some Harrys lap timer info later ... was pulling over 1-1.1 g in most of the corners and like 1.4 on the corkscrew dropping in ... total blast.

    Cheers bruhddas!

There's a thread about 308 vs. 360 values and about how a 360 will run circles around a 308. I know there's A LOT of variables that go into lap times at these events, but clearly the 430s don't just drive away from you guys in the 308s, even in a straight line. Maybe there is more to it than horsepower and 0-60 times.

You both have some very nicely prepped cars!

It's very hard to compare similarities of the driving experience between a 308 and a 360. As an owner of both, I bought my 360 specifically for track days and daily driving. It's a tactical missle on a roller coaster when you want it to be. But I wouldn't choose any other car than my 308 for driving through the hills with the top off. There's something about the analog, computer-free experience of a machine like a 308 that puts a huge smile on my face for completely different reasons. I'll emotionally attached to and will never ever ever sell my 308, while my 360 is a super fun toy. It's crazy now that they're basically the same price.

Fabulous! I haven't driven a track day for ages (and never as seriously as that!) but you've got me yearning! Loved hearing the snick on the shifts; those hilly corners look a bit tricky.

I gotta tell you Lucky, for someone who had never driven at Laguna, you were driving that track with picture-perfect lines.

Maybe we could conduct a combined effort and split the cost of that support group you had –or the guy that was helping me – and do a track day, like Speed Ventures or Hooked on Driving, before the end of the year. In fact, maybe we could invite some other 308's to come too. Eliminates the whole "Ferrari Club" element of the equation, which (no negative to the FCA) just simplifies things because it's all about the track (and we can create our own social agenda - no banquets or car shows needed!) The cost of one of these track days is about $400. And a better alternative than renting a track ourselves, because these companies have all the organizational and logistical details nailed. As well as providing the grouping structures so that rookies can run in the "white" group, and more experienced can run in the "blue" "yellow" or "red" groups, etc. And also - the best thing that comes with that $400 entry fee? INSTRUCTORS!!

So this post first began as a suggestion to you to get together again, but maybe your videos have inspired some other 308 guys to try ouit the track, too!!

Actually, if So Cal is an option, I know of a fantastic track day group called West Coast Racing, held at Willow Springs in March and October (3rd and 4th). The Ferrari Club piggybacks onto this event but if you're not an FCA member all you have to do is enter directly via West Coast racing. And they have instructors too. And it's great value! It cost less than the other groups – for two days, with instructors, and over a weekend (many track days are on weekdays). And it's a great group of drivers that comes to this event (I'd say about 3/4 modern and 1/4 vintage), and the organizers are fantastic. Also, you can camp out at the track for free or the nearby hotels run the range from Motel Hell to Embassy Suites. (But –*prepare the wife: Willow Springs is a bit rough around the edges compared to Laguna! But the track is great. Don't believe the hype that the track is "too fast" or "too tricky" – nonsense! JUST GO SLOWER… And let an instructor tell you the big secrets. Days like this are supposed to be about fun – and a day spend at a racetrack –*with a Ferrari 308!! –*is about the best dat I can think of.

Just a thought….. What do you think? And organized attendant to get some 308's (back) out onto the track? And show their owners that it's not really a big deal. And that it's also ok to be "slow" if you're inexperienced. A slow lap time at a racetrack in your Ferrari 308 will still be an experience you'll never forget. And to sweeten the attraction …add trackside support with experience Ferrari mechanics that could help us (sounds expensive, but I have an idea…)

    Any thoughts?

So what started as something simple (Luck and Pen continue their Dino vs. GTS rivalry), to trying to create a situation where other 308 owners feel comfortable to join in the fun.

I'll send it out on it's on post if I get some decent feedback here.

    Cheers,

    Pen

Thanks again for all the complimentary replies gents!

Pen, I dig your passion bruhdda!

FatBillyBob has tried to rally the Ferrari gang a few times for a track day and not had a lot of luck... but I'm with you... I'd really like to do another track day before the end of the year.

I'll be honest though, I don't dig Big Willow in a car without a cage. I have two other cars with cages. One is my 911 and the other is a 348 that I have to repair but the Laguna Seca event has got me EXTREMELY motivated to get er back on the road.

There's also the infield at Fontana. I think that is pretty safe. I don't dig the banked roval in an uncaged car. Yea I know I'm a bit of wuss when it comes to safety :). The speeds at Laguna Seca seemed so manageable and safe compared to Big Willow and Fontana with the banked turn.

Something else to maybe consider. A couple of the bruhddas (GT4 bruddas as a matter of fact) were autocrossing with me at the Porsche club in San Diego. They set up great tracks at the Quallcomm stadium parking lot.. I think your vintage car was a Porsche yes? You'd be "in" right away with that, and then show up next time with the GT4 :). Once you've done a few autocrosses with them you can go do track days and I really like that I kinda know everyone that I'm running with. Hearing the word "Porschuuur" gets a bit old ... but its still fun ;).

I'd practiced my line for Laguna quite a bit on I-racing. That was priceless because it really helped me get a relative feel for how fast I could take each corner and the right line for the corkscrew ... which is difficult at first even on the video games!

Anyway ... we will meet again! :)

    Cheers!
