Your wife is building a modelcar? Thats really special! In handbuiltcompanies like BBR, MR and CMC you see a lot of women building for a living, as a hobby, thats very rare! My wife prefers shopping and the gym!
Tom the 312 looks outstanding. Is that the MFH? Please try to elaborate on the modifications you made. I see you changed the tires and rims. I don't remember that car being one of the options in the kits and it looks like you made some body changes. Really great job. It just has the right 'look' to it.
The more I look at Tom's 312 the more I realize how many modifications were made. Thats the 67 car. The nose had to be changed, the driver cockpit area, the engine has differences including those strange intakes behind the motor. Lots of changes made to the MFH kit. Now I'm REALLY liking that model. Great job!!
Thanks Ed. I also had to bring up the sides around the engine as they lowered them in 1968. The engine heads are like a P4 and the gearbox bumper is all new. Alot of work to make this version. It is 1/24th scale wich helped, since you can find parts from sportcar kits. Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo 2010 model/photo contest-Chicago april 2010
Here are a few WIP shots from my F40, and some shots of my completed Mini from the 1967 Rallye Monte Carlo. I made a few parts for the F40 that turned out ok. Don't ask how, but the original fire extinguisher ended up flying across the room and into the garbage can... I emptied the can but couldn't find it. The one I made fits good, though. I also had to do some extra little parts for the engine wiring. I know it's not completely accurate, but I think it looks pretty good. The seatbelts were made with red ribbon, and I cut out some styrene to put the decals on. I then glued the styrene onto the ribbon. The Mini was pretty fun to build and turned out ok. I ended up screwing up a green rear window decal and had to leave it off. These decals seemed to be very thin and tissue like. The headlights fogged up really badly for some reason, too. I didn't take any WIP pics, but may do some for my wife's Mini. She's done the body and engine, so there's a ways to go still. I think she's enjoying it, and I'm enjoying the time I get to spend with her. I purchased the Testors decal making kit and am very disappointed. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong. The decals seem to be very tissue like and were hard to work with. Anybody have experience/tips with it? great job on the F40. The mini seems to have fisheye headlights... they look way to big... I have owned a mini, mine wheren't like that..
Im not really into Minis but the F40 looks excellent Im stealing your idea on how to get the decals on to the belts Here are a few shots of progress on the Scuderia i am building. Ive just added the stripes and am about to add another couple of layers of clear coat. The stripes were a PITA, i was tempeted to leave the clear decal area in the middle of them but decided to cut them into 6 pieces in the end and had real trouble aligning them. Stripes are Giallo but look 'whitish' in the pics for some reason. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey, Some really nice builds going here - Great stuff. I've just finished my first kit in more years than I want to remember, and while it's a long way from perfect I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out. I did a WIP on the build at: http://www.briansmodelcars.com/forums/thread/555524/page/1 If you haven't visited this site there's some *great* tutorials and lots of advise - Well worth a visit IMHO. Enjoy, cheers, Ian EDIT: I just realized I forgot to glue the LH wing mirror back on - *Again*! Should have only "published" photo's of the RHS Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for the comments, and looking good zoRob and Ian! I wasn't a huge Mini fan until I built this model. I'm really just a fan of anything with a racing number on it. The headlights do seem pretty big on the model. A few of the pics I've found of the actual Rally car had slightly bulgier lights, so I'm wondering if it was something they changed for different stages of the Rally.
Source? - I'd love to be proven wrong, but I grew up with those things, and was going to comment on the "fish-eyes" earlier, but figured that may be "rude"..... A quick search for the "definitive" rally Mini (Paddy Hopkirk, Monte Carlo, 1964) didn't suggest "fish-eyes"..... Cheers, Ian Image Unavailable, Please Login
+1 [Very cool idea!] So, if you were to do it again, what would you do?..... "Clear" decals should get covered by subsequent clearcoat(s), and alignment should be easier - I think?...... OTOH, "big" decals are PITA all by themselves! Decisions, decisions Cheers, Ian
They did use headlight covers on the Mini's at Monte Carlo in 1967, but the model needs the mounting clips on the top and bottom. Nice job on all the models!!! Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo 2010 model/photo contest-Chicago April 2010
I definitely agree that they seem bulgier than normal. The pic I was referring to was below, but I did also find that pic you posted. Very cool pics, and I wish I knew who took them. #177 was driven by Aaltonen and Liddon. Some of the pics I've found have the covers, some don't. Tom, I was playing with the idea of putting the straps on the lights, and also on the tire rack on the roof. Not sure exactly what to use to make them look good, though. Id probably do it the same way again. I was worried about it being a little darker or not looking right between the stripes after the final clear coats if i left the clear decal area in. Alignment would have been much easier to leave them in 3 parts and you may well have never even noticed after clearing and polishing but i didnt want to risk it as i want the model to be right. The model is entered in a competition build on another forum and then will be given to the owner of the real car, who is also an Fchatter so im trying (and seem to be succeeding at the moment) to build my best model yet. I have totally changed my way of building over the last year (been doing it about 2 now) I used to just want to get a model finished and kind of ended up rushing them but still enjoyed doing them. Now i seem to relish taking the longer path and really taking my time to get the best results. I only started doing it after seeing the builds on here and must say its the best way i have ever found to sit down and relax. Ps I started out building Revell models, may i recommend a Tamiya or even Fujimi for your next. They fit together much nicer and are more fun to build IMO
Some more up to date pics of the FXX i am building, ive added more carbon recently. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ive also started on an F2001 but have not done much other than filling/sanding joins and sink marks (i think thats what they are called ) I usually have 2 or 3 on the go but ended up with 5 before i started these, which are all now finished. I pulled out my Fujimi Enthusiast Daytona a few days ago to make a start but gave myself a slap on the wrist and now wont start anything until these are done. +1 I actually had two of the Revell 360 Spiders - I was going to do the second as a "duplicate" of my 1:1 and give the one shown above to someone on here who asked if I'd build it for him - But he seems to have gone AWOL (our discussions were about a year back!) However, I messed up the first chassis and got "one from two". [The gory details are in the WIP I mentioned - Suffice to say here the lesson learnt was "don't drink and build!" ] Anyway, I certainly agree - Tamiya do great kits, I've just now started on their Tyrell 003 from 1971/72 - I was at the British GP both years and remember JYS with fondness.... Once my LHS gets the Tamiya version of the 360 Spider in I'll pick that up so that I can follow your mantra of not "rushing" things!..... BTW, is the carbon in the FXX red? - It sure looks that way in the pix.....[EDIT - Now I've had my second coffee, not so much! It almost looks like you shot the pix in "red" light though - The dots on your mat also look a little red.....] Cheers, Ian
"Learn something every day!" - Very cool. From the pic you posted it almost seems that they'd take the covers off at night - The other lights are covered completely - Interesting.... From the pic it appears they're held on with those stretchy rubber things that are sometimes used to hold bonnets etc - I reckon you could get the effect with some styrene rod maybe? [Or even just a touch of black paint?] - Roof straps out of thin styrene strip? Cheers, Ian
The carbon is a normal colour and the dots on my cutting mat are grey but now I am on my iPhone there does seem to be a red tinge for some reason. You will get on much better with the Tamiya, don't forget to post pics Is it the 1/12 or 1/24? I've got a Tamiya 1/12 F1 car but have resisted cracking that one open until my skills improve a bit.
1/12th - I decided to go all out and got the one with PE parts - Never used those before.... Looking at your pix, I'd say your skills are just fine! And yep, I guess I'll post some pix as the thing progresses. Cheers, Ian
I'll look forward to the pics. Tamiya do some great PE bending pliers by the way, they are not cheap but well worth investing in IMO.
Lol, I'm starting the Tamiya F2001 this week, too. I got it pretty cheap at Hobby Lobby during their 30% off sale. I keep telling myself that I'll do a larger scale next, so technically 1:20 is larger than 1:24... I plan a 1:12 after this I hope. Looks like you're off to a good start. There is a short tutorial (in Japanese) on youtube for the F2001 that may be helpful, too. I was also thinking of using some thin strips of styrene for the bands on the Mini, or even trimming down an elastic band for the headlight/roof rack straps. I'll play with it a little later.
