Very nice paintwork!!. Thats what I use bare metal foil for, sharp lines when taping!!..

Ive recently painted a Porsche in the shell colours and some of the darker paint has bled through the edges of the tape, although there are white decals to cover it so it will not be visible. 2 or 3 colour paint jobs are something i am not comfortable with, are you saying that BMF is better for masking the edges of lines as it does not bleed through? If so i am going to try that next time :)

I tried masking with BMF back in the day...it's best qualities are that it is thin and that it conforms well.

The down side is it takes longer to use than tape and it is more expensive. Also I had one bad experience where the BMF adhesive fused to the paint and I had to completely strip it.

I use Tamiya masking tape 100% of the time, or a good cheaper alternative is Shurtape Razor Edge Gold/CP 60 tape...identical properties to Tamiya.

And for a tip when doing multicolor paint schemes....after you put on your base color and mask for the second color...spray a light coat of clear or the base color to 'seal' the tape.

This prevents bleed under the tape...repeat for each color added.

I dont use Tamiya paint, so I didnt have that problem with BMF. On 1/43rd
models I started using BMF because other tape would not put down a sharp enough line. Now I use BMF all the time for taping. It does cost more, but its still not that much. BMF will pull up if your not careful as it sometimes does not stick as well as tape. When you apply BMF rub the edge down with a toothpick along the paint line in several centimeters.

What kind of clear coat do you use?

Cheers, ill give that a try next time. I will also have a crack with the BMF as i have a few sheets laying around.

Whilst we are discussing tips, does anyone have any tips for Crazy Modeler disk brakes? I need to start some but keep avoiding it and picking up something else.

I tried several other products, but Tamiya tape is the best! (for me)
No bleeding through and easy to work with.

Perfect link, ty! That will help a lot.

Very good work there, Dino, and thanks everybody for the tips. I too have trouble with paint bleeding using Tamiya tape. I've been using some blue masking tape from Wal-Mart that works great, but will try your suggestions here. :)

I can certainly see why BMF would be good for 1/43(which I never build)...with the super thin material.

Mostly I use Tamiya TS13 clear, occasionally a good automotive lacquer and Gunze's B501 water based acrylic.

When using TS13(decanted) and other lacquers/enamels I thin them with Gunze's Mr. Thinner or Tamiya's (new) lacquer thinner which is basically the same as Gunze's. The thinner is very cool and calms the paint down for smooth spraying and way less orange peel.

Looks really nice. I know you have to paint the side window photoetch
frames, so that is a pain. The color im not sure about, although its close. Tecnomodel made a big mistake on their Lemans 1961 builtups and painted them metalic blue!! Are those the kit wire wheels? If so they look better than I thought.

That really is a great kit to start with with a almost perfect body(something Hiro kits never have !!)

    Thanks!

I saw the car in person last year at Amelia Island Concours... I tried to 'scale' the color. The real car looked something close to french blue with maybe a touch more blue.

The kit is engineered pretty well....although they simply copied Italeri's 250 SWB engine/drivetrain to make it full detail....the resin hood was so thick and loose fitting I just glued it on and made a half effort to fill the panel line.

Those are the kit rims painted metallic silver.

I saw the car back in 2005 at Laguna Seca and it looked slightly more
grey/blue, but yours looks close. Hiro kits are better for chassis detail, but Tecnomodel really nails the body shape. Their 1/24th 575 is also the best on the market. I hope they do the 1/24th F40LM like their website has listed someday.

Blue is one of the trickiest colors to match and photo.

Maybe not your best work, but certainly an excellent model nonetheless. Seeing the model up close, it's easy to see the compromises of the kit in the form of glass and photoetch frame fitment.

Here is a model I built during the 24 hours of LeMans; a group of us including Dino Scuderia get together to watch the race and build LeMans models. We allow leeway on preparation so the model can be finished during the race.

I chose to do the #25 '67 Ferrari 412P NART LeMans racer, using the Fujimi 330 P4 as the basis. As such, it's not 100% accurate, but it's pretty close and it was a fun build. I did most of my own decals, printing them on a color laser printer.

I still have a few minor details to work out, like staining the exhaust. Overall a cool looking car that was fun to model. Next year I'm probably building the '58 NART "Lucybelle", more of a challenge w/the photoetch wheels and full engine detail.

One word of note that Patrick from Minidelta brought up to me, the French stripes on the engine cover are reversed incorrectly just like on the restored car. Here is a photo of the real car back in 1961 at Lemans with the colors the correct way. The car looks darker blue in this photo, but it is a lighter shade of grey blue.

Interesting. I have a 1/43 diecast pre-built that is dark metallic blue and the stripe arrangement is per that pic. No other markings are on the diecast, just the stripes like the one version made by Tecnomodel.

I understand the dark metallic blue colors came later around the time NART took delivery. It was Metallic blue when Sterling Moss drove it at Daytona. I asked the owner what the base original color was on the car when it was stripped and he said grey/blue non metalic like it was at Lemans in 1961.

A few more from the Ferrari Expo 2009 model contest held near Chicago during April.
The GTO's are from BBR 1/43rd kits by Kaz Shibuya, the D50 is from a 1/43rd Rennaisance kit, P4 by Ramon Garcia and Dino are 1/24th Fujimi kits and Enzo from a Tamiya 1/24th kit with added details by Steve Yuen!

Steve has a website at www.cifesystem.com.

He also posted alot of photos of the buildup and finished model at www.automotiveforums.com.

Steve is working on something really special for next years Ferrari Expo. Can't wait to see it!!

Model Cars Magazine should have a nice color writeup on Ferrari Expo 2009 in one of the next issues.

I've gotten a lot of good ideas and learned alot form the WIP threads there. They do some amazing things.

As an update, I'll be finishing the 959 tonight...finally. :) This one feels like it's taking forever, but that's only becuase I had to strip the paint and redo it. For some reason, the paint bubbled up really bad on the final coat. I didn't bother taking pics because I was so mad. :) Anyway, I'll take some of the final product and post later.

Forever???? It takes me about a year to finish one....
As long as they turn out well, thats okay.. It gives me time to think about how I will do certain things, what version, what I will change for a better result..

Lack of time due to work and other obligations!!
