Nouvolari should be in there as should Rudolf Caracciola. I accept there wasn't anything as well organised as F1 running pre 50's but the European Championship was just as recognised and fiercely fought over.

Cool! The only guy there that wasn't on the initial list is PK, and someone's already suggested he be added! :)

I'm gonna go see if I can find a more "flexible" voting site......

    Cheers,
    Ian

    :( ;)

Remember, the initial "postulation" was that we all (mostly) agree on a "top 5" (in the "F1" era) if we're allowed to choose from not many more than a dozen - We'll never agree completely, but I maintain the list is pretty short; I think we've got about 15 "legit" entries right now.

What I'd like to do is list those 15 and let everyone vote for their "top 5" - Would be nice if we could do 5 points for 1st, 4 for 2nd etc then total the whole mess up in a week or so......

    Cheers,
    Ian
    PS - It's all Neuro's fault! :)

Understood. But as Pedro (?) noted, we've got to draw the line somewhere, and the "modern" F1 era seemed reasonable to me.

    Cheers,

One race does not make a GOAT. And the Ring lap, while awesome, has nothing to do with F1. But of course it is your opinion.

DSG and yes I'm an ardent fan ;). If Black Jack is on the list, I might mention Dan did fairly well as his team mate for three years, outqualifying and outpointing everyone at Brabham during his tenure. While I realize his race wins and championships aren't plentiful, Jim Clark's opinion ought to count for a few votes..;)

That's a fair place to draw the line. Might be interesting to have a poll one day covering the pre-F1 GP drivers. I know there are some really knowledgeable reprobates hanging around here and it would be good to let them cut loose with some of their historical knowledge.

Going by the proposed list or the fact that its a "GOAT" I think you just mean the F1 era :)

I would take off the current drivers. They are not GOATs yet as they are all still work in progress. Including them just stirs up troll style arguments and takes away from what could be a very interesting and cool debate imho.

I 'm inclined to agree, as i also don't see any off the curret drivers as a GOAT (now that i think of if i do see some resemblance between a goat and 2 of them!!)

Current drivers already proved themselves in half a career. Better results in less starts than some high regarded drivers

^^^ This is why current drivers need excluding from the GOAT candidate list. Too much emotional baggage in the community...

    Correct.

But don't overlook Guy Moll, then. Ranked alongside the likes of Tazio Nuvolari and Stirling Moss by the Old Man Himself.

    :)

Went down a complete rabbit hole searching for a polling site that would do what we (I?) want. I even learnt that the common "1-5 scale where 1 is highly dissatisfied & 5 is highly satisfied" is called the "Likert Scale". I thought for a while I could kludge something together using that for 1st thru 5th per voter. But my head started hurting!

So, I'll just put it up here as originally planned.

    Thanks! - That's what we thought. ;)

And yes, I agree, and it's *my* poll :)p), so I'm excluding all current jockeys from the list. They *may* enter the pantheon of the greats once they've retired, but not as yet. [With apologies to the triplets.]

I'm putting it together next. Will take a while, but it should be along "shortly".....

    Cheers,
    Ian

You know...I just can't see this.

Maybe split into eras? Nationlised (Pre WWII) Then, the next era would be the Gentlemen racers/factory teams.

After this era, Tobacco Sponsorship really changed F1. The amount of money involved skyrocketed, simultaneously, safety made major changes. F1 changed so drastically in such a short span its not really possible to compare these two eras. Most of those from the former died, or retired before making it into the latter era.

The final era, would be the Tabacco sponsorship ban, to present.

It would make far more sense, to pick a top driver from each era. If someone with a better knowledge of history wants to define more eras, so be it.

Once you get the top driver of each era, you can vote off between just those?

It would take a lot of controversy out of anyone missing the list, as they'd have their chance in an era specific list.

4 pages and only 2 or 3 mentions of Piquet?

For me he should be in the list because:

    - Defeated Prost & Renault and Villeneuve & Ferrari with a normally aspirated Brabham Ford in 1981.

    - Won the 1983 championship with the BMW turbo engine over Prost & Ferrari.

    - In 1987 the whole Williams team wanted to have an English champion (Nigel Mansell) and made everything to do so but with intelligence Piquet was able to clinch the tittle. Other contenders were Prost and Senna.

For me someone who have beaten Prost, Senna, Lauda, etc., should not only be at the top ten but also top 5, no?

All valid points, and to a large extent I agree; Many of us have noted that it's impossible to compare across eras. No argument from me there. However, as noted above, the idea is to see how "big" the pool of potential candidates really is; I believe it's pretty small......

But, if you want to do one by era (and you've made a good stab at defining those! :)), please feel free!

    Cheers,
    Ian

Agree but beating GV in Ferrari's 1981 turbo wasn't that difficult given it's horrid chassis and poor reliability-making GV's Spanish gp win all the more epic...

That said, Nelson should be on the short list. Loved his MMA skills in Germany 1982.
