I received my October C&D today and there is a mention of Fchat in the editorial section. It was written by the writer who smacked the wall with the 599 GTB on the test shoot in Italy.

Just got my car and driver today. Although it wasnt as exciting of a wait as last month's (for Jims P4/5 to be seen) here is a blurb about F-chat:

"...while poster "m3forlife" tespassed on the Ferrari board www.ferraichat.com to state simply this: "I hate Car and Driver with passion"

Perhaps this guy can string together a few words, but--my god--he is a talentless driver and an unrepentant *********.

The entire article is a defense against the online chastizing that they received after their photoshoot wreck of the factory's 599 GTB. They reference a few online chat rooms, including Ferrarichat.

Perhaps they shouldn't have played the "hey, buy our magazine because guess what? We crashed the newest Ferrari!" angle. Writing about it is one thing, but using it as a selling tool is another. I suppose it's classic marketing - and it worked - but internet chastizing by enthusiasts is the price you pay. There's a balance with everything.

Maybe I shouldn't talk, having made a similar mistake as the journalist from C&D. But I didn't try to profit from it (maybe I should have - I could have paid the bill by now!).

It's not so much they lost control of the car.

In the original written recap of the event they openly admitted they were going for a photo and wanted it "tail out", so in defeating the engineered driver aids they damaged the vehicle.

IMO, it was a bad idea in the first place, and it was definately the wrong place to attempt it.

Things to remember, especially in a Ferrari you do not own.........

Well, yeah, but I hate to be prematurely classed as someone among "the best of us"... I've still got a ways to go before I get there... :)

Thats exactly how i felt. I didn't buy it because of that. The front cover said something like "We drive the new 599....and crash it". That doesn't seem cool to me, it seems like they've got a bunch of idiots testing cars and makes me wonder how accurate their road tests are.

Interesting incite that some people care enough to see what's being said on F-Chat.

Yes, soon they will be reading P&R for insight on foreign policy! ;) :p

It is a great sign that this is becoming a more influential car community.

Hahah that was great, guessing that the steering went out on you?

I didn't actually read the C&D with the new 599 test, but if the cover was phrased as some of you have said then they deserve every bit of criticism that they have received after printing that. Ferrari or not that's a pretty stupid headline to be putting on a magazine that is supposed to be an "authority" on automobiles.

    seconded.

The latest article from Robinson epitomizes the class that that magazine has. For me, it's not only the best automotive magazine available, but the best magazine, period.

*EVERY* decent driver will spin, or crash, or make a mistake once in a while -- it's the price of trying to find the "envelope". That C&D openly admit to the "whoopsie" is testament to their collective character; I'm sure that most other automotive journalists would try to keep it quiet.

    Good magazines, for sure.

But C&D is interesting no matter what the topic -- "it's the writing stoopid".
It could be a review of the latest econobox from Hyundai, a nuclear submarine or the latest in minesweeping technology or earth-moving equipment. Every article is well written, informative, witty and entertaining. Essentially, journalism at its finest. Evo and Octane are testosterone-fuelled rags aimed at extreme-petrolheads. Nothing wrong with that, but do not come anywhere close to the well-rounded nature of C&D. Where else can you get the latest scoop on the ethanol sham, the red-light camera scam, a review of the newest Ferrari, and of an airport fire-engine all in the same publication ?

    Fchat?

C&D is more or less a rehash of most press releases. Everything is good with them. They never come out an say "man, what a godawful POS XYZ is"...

So what if you call a spade a spade and don't get any more ads from XYZ. Sometimes, I think they exist only to sell reprints to XYZ.
