I used to do a cuban every week, but my friend hasn't been back to Holland to refill his humidor in over a year.. I don't think I could find my cutter if my life depended on it. My Dad still goes for the wood-tipped cheapo cigars even though he's got experience with almost everything under the sun.

I smoke cigars. I like everything from Padron. A few things from Torano and C.A.O. I like nicaraguan and honduran tobacco better than most of the dominican stuff I've tried.

I want to start trying cubans. I had a couple of things of questionable authenticity that were good but it has been a long time.

From the reviews I've read I think I would like cuban Montecristos and San Cristobals. I will probably pick up a box of the Monte 4's soon.

 

I had an Ashton Virgin Sun Crown the other day. Awsome burn. I usually smoke on the golf course. My current girl friend has to be the most anti smoking person I have ever meet. So I have to hide my cigars and I don't get to smoke much because she is always around.
How many of you use and punch? Or Cut?

 

I cut with a Xikar mostly. I like torpedo shaped cigars so the punch doesnt work too well with those. I will use a punch sometimes depending on the size and condition of the cigar.

 

I may try that on some small ring cigars. If I use a punch I like to punch a normal shaped cigar when the punch is almost as wide as the cigar. When I use a punch on a large cigar tar tends to build up in the head.

 

I quite smoking several years ago, but used to smoke Dunhill.
Now i only "smoke" cigars.

Cigars: Sorry, folks, but I think Cubans are overrated. Dominican's are at least an equal for a fraction of the cost. Plus, they're legal. My choice? Macanudo.

I just took it up a notch. Previously, I only had a few of the .99'ers at the local liquor store... So I went to the local cigar shop and got a half dozen mix from his walk in humidor. i even kept a little log for myself. i'll share it below in case anyone is interested.

montecristo (churchill)
great great great. stayed lit at 80 northbound on the 405 with the top dropped.

Avo Uvezian [little longer than montecristo (churchill)]
1.5 hours... easy to light but wouldn't stay lit. relit half dozen times.
really good though. enjoyed it. if it had stayed lit, it would have been my favortite.

Domaine Avo
1.5-2 hours... lasted a lot longer than i thought. not harsh, not much flavor.
with a large scotch and i'm very lightheaded. had to relight a few times.
* note: i ended up getting real sick this night. stomach. like i wanted to throw up.

Macanudo (gold label)
1 hour. not harsh, not much flavor. hard to light but burned well.
feeling good, relaxed, but not terribly light headed.

Avo Uvezian (Avo NO 9) [short peach tube]
1 hour. lit quickly, burned well. fine taste
feeling good, releaed. not sick like the other night.
had a little bit of fuzz... like a slight molding action or something.

Avo Uvezian Maestroso XO [long orange tube]
gave to j.b. he seemed to like it.

 

on the 4th a buddy shared some with me. the tobacco wrap was a lot darker than what i was accustomed to. they were really thick to. I believe he called them "60 ring". the extra girth made them more comfortable to hold. maybe they were 'red label'. any idea what this was? or is this just an impossible question with the little info i have?

 

I agree. I enjoy a Perdomo "square" torpedo. probably one of the best cigars I have ever smoked.

 

I'm still holding onto a Cuban I got as a gift 3 years ago... just looking for a good excuse and a good teacher...

Then unfortunantly you probably won't enjoy it too much at all. Cuban cigars are the most complex and powerful cigars out there(the 1st will knock you on your ass). Been smoking them for years and have quite a bit of knowledge on the subject.

I say smoke the thing immediately with a close friend or relative, you only live once!
