I'm just now getting over the stomach flu/virus thing. Horrible. Ugh. It was like a food poisoning episode I had a few years ago, but instead of lasting 2-3 days, it was condensed into one and a half.

I lost 9 pouds the last time I checked and sweat off a few more. As I type this, it is my first meal in a few days. Soup. It's going down, and I can only hope doesn't come back up involuntarily.

I don't know the origin per se, but it did make for some interesting research.

"It's 5 o'clock somewhere" is a Buffett song, but I couldn't find where he got it or determine if he was the first user in that form.

The idea of a time when it was OK to begin drinking is actually fairly recent. In previous centuries, people regularly used to drink beer and wine throughout the day and with their meals. One reason was that water was pretty nasty and the alcohol helped to make the water fit to drink. However, various societies have gone through periods when the population overdid it and there was a crackdown on excessive drinking; the US did that during prohibition in the 1920's.

During prohibition in NYC, the speak-easies supposedly had a tacit agreement with the police not to open before 6PM, an instance of having to wait to a certain time to begin drinking. Also in 1927, the phrase "cocktail hour" was first used. Supposedly, an establishment called "Tony's" violated the agreement by opening for drinks at 4PM and people started calling the period between 4PM-6PM the cocktail hour (perhaps because mixing drinks helped make it easier to permit drinking earlier).

I would expect the phrase "it's cocktail hour somewhere" or "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" would have it's origins around or after that period.

P.S. No one knows the origin of "cocktail", but one of the several possibilities is that one of the early mixed drinks was created in the late 18th century and it was composed of chicken broth and ale, hence cock-ale. Try drinking that for your flu!

i get about 2-3 colds per year, nothing out of the ordinary. but my dad and i get the same thing, mine started about 3 years ago, where usually in the winter we get a cough that is just unbearable and it lasts for usually a month or a month and a half. we've been to doctors, had ct scans, no one can figure out what it is. my dad thinks his started when he came back from somewhere in the carribean, that maybe he picked something up down there, but who knows. as for my regular colds, i've found that airborne works incredibly well.

I'm finally over it after living with it for 10 days. Started as a sore throat, then moved to the head for a 3 day migraine along with severe nasal congestion, chest tightness, wheezing cough and dehydration. One of the worst I've had in years; it practically immobilized me. I got it from my brother who had it worse, so he had to see a doctor. They diagnosed it as viral pneumonia. Best wishes to all of you that are battling any of these symptoms.

Have a slight cold, seems to be reigniting. I went to the gym yesterday and was dripping in sweat. Felt like I had spent 2 hours there and it was only 45 minutes. Going again today to clear the pores again. Then pick up some more meds.

Had my flu shot, and I'm no where near that sick.

For you guys that get migranes:
    -2 cloves garlic
    -chop/crush
    -swallow with glass of milk

Sounds disgusting, but it even cures bad headaches. My mom finally talked me into it years back and it's well worth a shot.

Been there, done it. I've had a GREAT run. Semi-fluish in December, it turned into shingles at the beginning of January. Now, the meds I'm on for that lowered my immune system and I caught full-blown stomach flu. Rock on! Finally starting to feel better.
