i gotta agree that valentino's at rifle range has excellent italian food. and the owner, signor valentino's an ardent fcar fan. nuff said.

    prego's another good italian joint.

the new ps cafe at dempsey has crap food and even crappier service but the decor's not too shoddy.

garibaldi has hands down the best chocolate cake i have ever tasted anywhere in the world. in fact quite surprisingly i must say food in singapore is of a comparatively high global standard, especially for its price.

if you fancy yourself a neo-classical louis xiv type, check out divine society at parkview square, the gothamesque building in bugis

but my all-time stalwart would be mezza9, for all round great food, funky service staff and a swanky vibe. great as an aphrodisiac too ;)

oh yeah, if any of you guys want free and secure parking in orchard, pm me. i've got just the place

There is a coffee shop at Tanjong Rhu which sells nice small char siew paos and really nice wanton nee.

Really nice prawn mee, mush better than the one opposite caltex off still road. it is just off Macpherson Kopitiam a few shops away from the best turtle soup in Singapore.

Jumbo serves nice pepper and chilli crabs..

thumbs up for the hokkien mee at chomp chomp...

what about the bar chor mee at bedok north 85?

I know that Tanjong Rhu shop, my wife's favourite. It's deep inside the old HDB estate opp the Tanjong Rhu swimming pool/LaSalle Art school where you'll drive pass a BMW/Mini workshop/warehouse. The Char Siew Paos are from a DimSum stall in a coffee shop under a HDB flat & next to the refurbished hawker centre. I think they're closed on Monday?

My favourite Bah Kut Teh shop is still the one @ Havelock road behind the Shell Kiosk. They serve the "White pepper spicy soup" rather than the dark ones. Balestier has a few but I find their soup a little too spicy & taste more like pepper soup! Any better reccommends? The one I tried in Penang was so-so but served in claypot.

I'm very familiar with Blk 85 Bedok North~FengShan Hawker ctr just opp the Bedok Police station cos my wife stays there! There are three Bah Chor Mee stalls with the better two right on the first row & the last inside. All three stalls have long waiting list. In my opinion, the left one of the first row is better as you can see from your own's Q#. These are highly reccommended as well: Western food stall, porridge stall 3rd row (long waiting list), BBQ seafood (stingray etc), Satay Beehoon (very fresh ingredients & superb satay sauce), "Tang yuen" in ginger/peanut soup, dessert stall (last row facing HDB shops). Too many to list, I think this is one of the busiest food centre in Singapore after dark. Business is especially good after midnight & hundreds of people dine there. Even my Thai friends wants to go back there.

Correct, that's the one.. do check out their western food too at the market. Closed on fridays. Good portion, well seasoned and chrispy garlic bread for $4.50. Order the pock or chicken chop...

As for Ba Kut teh, there is one at Joo chiat opposite the crab store. It's $12 for a claypot good enough for 2 persons. Some may prefer the one off Rangoon Road. Spicy soup and a little more EX..

There's also a chicken rice place opposite Novena Church which serves great roast chicken.

SfChallenge, think I have seen your car driving pass once... off Fort road.

There's this beef kway teow place at katong called "Top Beef Brisket". It's on the same stretch of road as Holy Family church. It's an air-conditioned place that's usually not packed. I like the beef brisket kway teow or even with rice. Nice thick gravy and tender soft beef brisket.

Just across the road from there, there's this old-skool coffee shop that sells wanton mee / chicken rice. The name of the place is Mei-yuen (on the same side as the Mobil station). I grew up in the area and always remembered the place as having a perpetually slippery floor. Portions are very generous and the noodle texture is always perfect (if you dine in, takeaway tends to lose some goodness).

One thing about eating in katong though. The very limited parking space. I tend to ride my scooter down instead of driving down. Helluva lot faster!

Another east side eatery just came into my mind. It's Hongkong street Chun Kee restaurant. It's at the corner of East Coast Road and Telok Kurao Road. There have been some imitations that have sprouted up recently but I find that the east coast road one is the best, IMO. Sliced fish hor fun is wonderful, and so is their Sze Chuan hot and sour soup. If bland-ish tasting sliced fish soup is your cup of tea, their sliced fish soup is pretty good too.

I think the chicken rice place is called Nam Kee. Standard has dropped over the years. Then again, maybe its the other chicken rice places whose standards have improved.

I was so tempted by the chilli crab that I went to buy one packet. The sauce is freaking hot even after 20mins! Not as tasty, should have had it in their shop but sauce is good. S$27.00 for a kilo +. This is the one along Geylang main Rd opp the UOB bank.

I had FeiFei wanton noodles on Sunday morning. This is the original stall in JooChiat. The ingredients are @ the bottom while the "white" noodles are on top & in a bundle.

In fact, the coffeeshop offers Hokkien prawn noodles (soup/dry), chicken rice (quite tasty & many people order just a plate of meat while they also offer very good porridge) & a YongTauFoo stall as well. You guys can park around the small streets or just along the main road but the TP do come & check once a while. Sunday mornings are packed while most of the stalls finish their businesses by late afternoon, should be closed by evening. The famous Nonya rice dumpling is just next door & they manufacture & sell many other "quehs" as well.

If you guys want to savour the wanton noodle next Sunday morning, it's my treat.

Yeah khim's brother (khim from carfreaks) owned one. #10 I think. It had a tiny pool on the roof (still has I guess). Rental for those is around 6-7k. Too much in my opinion. No side windows...but if done right can be stupendous. And true, no parking.

We there for dinner tonight. Had the sharksfin with crab meat. It was dissappointing. The texture was thin. I have tried the other branch at Oasis next to the Indoor stadium...much better. Their seafood tang hoon wasn't bad though

The carrot cake at the back is also the better one, similar attitude problem..

I lived there all my life, been there since I was born.
How long ago were you there? Long enough to rem the Tannery/Crocodile farm?

The best one I know is the one off in the east coast, near one of the INfantry Units...I used to take MID vechicle from Portsdown Camp and drive there to buy while serving NS, enduring National Service, one hawker centre at a time.
