Felix-Tarmoh runoff to be decided in primetime on Monday night

EUGENE, Oregon -- On the first Monday night in July at Hayward Field, there will be a track meet. This is not unusual; Hayward is one of the most storied track and field venues on the planet, a green-painted homage to the modern history of the sport. There is a deep passion here. But this track meet will be different from any that has come before it. There will be just one event and only two participants. One reluctant, but accepting. The other bitter. It will last roughly 11 seconds and then it will be over.

And in this surreal fashion one of the most bizarre and embarrassing chapters in the history of American Track and Field will turn suddenly intriguing in the Pacific Northwest twilight. Sprinters Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh will contest a 100-meter runoff for the third and final spot on the U.S. Olympic team. The race, the first of its kind in U.S. Olympic track history, will be broadcast live on NBC at 8pm EDT (the track window is expected to open at approximately 8:07 pm and the ''show'' is expected to last approximately eight minutes), as a cut-in to the network's ratings-rich coverage of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha....

Tarmoh will contest the race in lane four and Felix in lane five. If the race were to finish in another dead heat, a coin flip would decide the third member of the team...

I was really looking forward to watching that tonight. There had to be something going on behind the scenes that caused her to back out, IMO.

I'm guessing NBC probably tossed a couple of hundred thousand bones to keep Allyson Felix as this Olympic's Evelyn Ashford/FloJo/Marion Jones/Jackie Joyner, etc. No way she just decided not o compete against her training partner.
