A friend is concerned his toddler nephew's father is flying around with the kiddo for visitation trips...

Does a felony conviction affect PPL status?

If it's a DUI then yes....... IF....

Other than that, I have no idea.

I fly my son around all the time. It's safer than the drive to the airport statistically speaking.

I think it is up to the FAA. The FARs (Federal Aviation Regulations) say that a pilot must be of "good character".

I found this attorney website with some info on it:

    Interesting quote from that site:
    http://www.aviationattorneys.com/resources/aviation/aviation-license/how-obtain-a-pilot%E2%80%99s-license-with-a-prior-record.htm

"The FAA does not prohibit applicants with a prior criminal record from obtaining a pilot’s license because their laws only state that the applicant must be of good character."

So, I think the answer is, it depends. Depends on the type and severity of the felonies.

I think for a private or commercial, as long as it wasn't drug related or a DUI, it wouldn't keep someone from getting a certificate. Even in those cases, it may only prevent them from getting a medical certificate (which has the same effect, essentially).

The ATP has the "good moral character" clause, and it may prevent someone from getting an ATP. Certainly the FAA has used non-flying convictions as reason to revoke an ATP.

I guess I don't understand the question, though.

If the mother is concerned about the toddler's safety in the aircraft, she should talk to her divorce attorney and see if they can get restrictions placed on the visitation.

Or he could butt out, since it's not his kid. Maybe the kid enjoys flying? Sounds like somebody trying to give a dad a hard time.

    Oh yeah. I remember.

The felony was for assault, iirc. I wanna say it was for attacking his former father in law, the childs grandfather. Dont remember exactly. Jerry Springer stuff to be sure.

My reason for the thread wasnt to help this family prevent a dad seeing his kid, I just just curious of the impact of a felony on a PPL.

Something like that I'd say has no effect.
