I've noticed that some fenders wear the yellow badge on both front sides while others do not. Can anyone tell me the significance of with or without. I think they look great but wondered if anyone could provide some feedback on their origin and significance?

It's a factory option referred to as the "Scuderia Shields" although there are aftermarket alternatives. The factory ones use a different fender to make it look less tacky.

I don't know about the origin or signifigance, but for some people it is a MUST-HAVE option therefore it's a good option to have for resale value.

Does anyone know where the "less tacky" ones can be purchased? I've seen them advertised on ebay from a number of different vendors. I like to look and would want to add them as a keeper rather than resale item.

A must-have option IMHO. Whenever I see a Ferrari without them I wonder "why"?

Since their origin was on the race cars some of us see them on street cars and wonder why.

Agreed. But I got them on my 430 because they are almost universally wanted now plus my wife likes the horsey badges. I would not even think of adding them to my 328 however.

This is quite a touchy subject. The shields have a history of gracing Ferrari race cars and other limited edition, or halo models (e.g. 288 gto, F40, F50, Enzo etc). They were never placed on basic road going Ferraris. The base car shield phenomenon is quite recent and coincides with Ferrari's general trend towards mass marketing the brand. To a certain extent, this devalues the shield and means that there is nothing special to a car that wears it as it is no longer exclusive. In some circles, I have even come across shield snobbery - in other words, if your shields are factory fitted, they are considered worthy, if they are aftermarket ones (especially the tacky stick on ones), they are considered in some way 2nd class. Personally, a car without shields would not put me off buying it - and in some cases I believe it is preferable (e.g. IMHO the 599 looks far better without shields). However, increasingly, the used market seems to want original shields as part of the spec...

You have GOT TO BE Kidding? People are THAT HUNG UP?

Not circles I need to haunt. Thanx for the head's-up. IMO, THAT is too stupid for words.

Now all being told, my Marrone 308 looks REALLY GREAT with um .............. and without um. I do both.

But what about for us people for whom it is a MUST-NOT-HAVE option? Bad for resale value, no?

    Agreed, not a fan here.

If someone doesn't know that a red 328 is a Ferrari, it would probably take a neon sign on the roof...

Wow, it does appear to be a "hot topic" and the discussion is what I appreciate most on FChat. Not to embarrass myself further but.. I've seen magnetic shields for sale and before I would permanently epoxy them on I'd like the ability to see them off (currently) and then on. I would also like to avoid a "beginners" mistake with shields on a 348 that is not a track car. I wonder if members feel the same about any "visible modifications" from stock such as different rims for example.

It's not huge deal, really........although it's well known I point out 'North American' Ferraris should wear a NART badge...LOL!
That would be OUR 'Factory Team' emblem...

There's actually some "half thickness" shields that replicate the look of the Factory recessed original units....

I wouldn't mess with magnetic just put them on with the 3M Emblem adhesive sheet material body shops use for all car badging, they haven't used studs and speed nuts in years......

My car had magnetics when I bought it and right now, I like the way it looks.

The car wears the shield, not I.

I would definitely "stick" with the magnetic shields to start, or something very reversible. No permanent damage to the paint, and you can live with the car a while before deciding. I can see why people like them, but fender shields are a lot of badge for a car that probably doesn't more of that.

Strictly my opinion here, but I would avoid buying a Ferrari with add-on shields, painted targa roof, etc. I'm not a fan of visible modifications from stock on Ferraris. I think most rim changes are attempts to make an '80s or '90s car look like it is newer than it is, and they usually are the oppositve of an improvement. But, it's easy enough to change wheels.

I think very few owners really care very much, it's just something to discuss. My attitude is that it's a hobby and anyone should be allowed to do what makes them happy without mother hens nit pickin' at them.

It's a marketing gimmick for Ferrari to make an additional $1500 per car.

But, I like them none the less. I notice that when people are next to you, they stare at it for some reason like "what the heck is that!"

My 575M does not have factory or any other shields, and I like it that way. I think it may be a reaction to my time in the UK, where Maranello Concessionaires stuck Ferrari script and cavallinos all over their Dino 246s and even Fiat Dino owners did the same. No thanks, not for me, if given a choice. Would not fall on my sword over shields, just prefer the cars without them.
