I was cleaning out my grandparents attic (seriously) and I found some hot wheels from 1968 that are still in the box and never were opened. One of them is a Ferrari 312P with redline wheels. I don't know alot about model cars but from the box says it's a "Grand Prix Series" from 1968. The top of the box has been cut away, but the rest of it has never been opened. Do any of you know what it's worth or where I can find out? I'm gonna put it on ebay but I don't know what to ask for it.

Very cool! I forgot about those buttons that came with the cars. I'm curious what it's worth.

That has to be worth something. But just start the bidding at $9.99. The listing fees will be cheaper and it will go for what its worth anyway. I am currently selling over 300 Aurora AFX slot cars. Some already sold for $900 each and I listed them all at $9.99. I knew they were wirth more and would sell for much higher. Not to mention you will also start a feeding frenzy more easily with a lower starting price. I've seen it happen hundreds of times. The same item will be on ebay at the same time. The cheaper starting one goes up more quickly and passes the one with the higher starting price. If you check out my auctions over the last 3 weeks you will see what I mean. If I started the auctions for what I thought they were worth I would have racked up much more in fees.

The sky's the limit on the original ones that's a nice find...yep they had matching metal buttons!

There is a Buyer's Guide you may want to find one or just let the ebay market decide!

Must have been your father's then??????????

My dad said they were given to my granfather by a buddy of his that owned a gas station and got them as a promotional item from shell. I guess they used to give them out when you filled up. He called me last night and said he found the entire box of them in the back of the attic and there is probably 300 or so of them still in the unopened packages, I guess I should call a collector or something.

WOW ,, as an avid Redline Hotwheel collector,, I have to say you have found THE MOTHER LODE!!!!!
Seeing that the cards are cut off,, that will decrease the value considerably but you will still make a tidy sum. Be warned once word gets out,, you will be busy,, there are million scam artists in the Hotwheel world,,
I'm just merely trying to give a fellow F-chat friend a bit of advice,, take it or leave it,
you might just want to sit on this stuff for a bit and watch the eBay market to get a feel for what prices the cars go for,, prices are all over the place depending on colour, condition etc,,,
    check out my little collection,,,

I appreciate it if you could send me some pics of what you have,,

I agree he should proceed slowly...maybe inventory and post Ferrari specific stuff here! ;)

I appreciate your advice on this stuff, as I 'm pretty clueless on the value of everything. When I get the box from my dad, I'll inventory everything and post a list on here and give you guys first dibs on any F-cars, or really anything you want from the list. I did call a guy who I found on the internet and seemed pretty reputable. He kind of gave me the low down on what to look for condition wise, and what to watch out for. He was pretty legit and told me to sit on them for a little while, and watch the market. He said if I was interested in selling them give him a call. He seemed honest. He did say that the redline dodge chargers, mavericks, VW beach bombs are pretty valuable and I know there are several of each in the box. Here are a few pics of some different ones.

Psod is NOT KIDDING! You have a GOLD MINE on your hands!!!

I have a few copies of the most widely accepted pricing guide for Hot Wheels. Tomart's Guide to Hot Wheels. That red Ferrari 312P...ALONE...is valued at $650. mint in the package (assuming a mint package, of course) according to the 5th edition (2002) Tomart's guide. That Chevy Nomad? $200., the Lotus Turbine only about $100., The VW Beach Bombs? $300. to $500. depending on the color. The Hairy Hauler? $100 to $200.

There may be an updated printing of the Tomart guide that you should find. Well worth the $25. to $30. investment. It is written by a well known collector named Mike Strauss. He has been accused, in the psat, of artifically inflating car vaules to enrich the value of his own extensive collection, but that is just an accusation. Not sure about the validity of such.

DO: as much research to value as possible, try selling on ebay as individual pieces as whole large sets have signifigantly fewer high dolar buyers with the $$$

DO NOT: let some schmuck try to make you an offer for the whole kit-and-kaboodle until you have realistically valued out the whole set. Read the book to see what is said about damaged & chopped cards with minty cars still inside. MANY "collectoers' will try to get you to sell them the whole set (or meet with you so that they can "pick over" the CHERRY highly sought after cars only leaving you with the scraps saying that "those are the only ones that they need to complet their "collection". BS, those are JUST the ones that "they" know that they can make the highest profit off of. They may call themselves "collectors", but in reality they are only looking to take the uneducated for a buck. I think the ancestors of these guys were the types that offered the indians "pretty plastic beads" for all their land.

Psod is right: BEWARE OF SCAM ARTISTS!!!

PM me if you can’t find a Tomart’s guide. I’ll loan you my most recent copy.

    Disclaimer:
I have no interest in any gain here. I have a collection. I am trying to par down my collection. (all the good Redlines are already gone). I can use the money for an engagement ring right now….SO, I assure you that I have no interest in, or money to spend on, more cars.

    PS:

I had a good friend offer a VERY SWEET set for sales at a "Collector's Toy Show". His price was fairly "top dollar". Another dealer came up and offered my friend a cash price of less than 50% of this asking price (book value). When my friend replied, "No, I need at least $X.00" (just about 10% lower than "top dollar") the other dealer said, "I can't give you that much. How do you expect ME to make any money then?" We bluntly remined this little huckster that they were not HIS to make MONEY off of; they belonged to my friend". Pissed the dealer guy off ROYALLY!

We ended up going ebay and got about 85% of the original top dollar asking price.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK......& stay away from hucksters!!!

If you want, send me a list of the name of each car & what color it is (type of color too--enamel or "candy coating" style paint. I could look up the values for you. Realistically, you could be sitting on a box of cars worth anywhere from $5,000.00 to $15,000.00. Many of the Shell promo cars were in the solid enamel style paint and were only produced in 1973.....VERY VALUABLE ones, these are.......

This is a very interesting find!!!

I also collected Hotwheels for several years. I probably have several thousands in storage and sitting around my house. I will also warn you to be very careful who you trust when it comes to value. I've seen "grown" men get in fights over these cars.

Goodluck with whatever you decide to do!

    Chris
