I run mine on half BP ultimate, and half Avgas. And it seems to love it.

Indeed I agree with this as well. I wouldn't have a problem with changing the turbo's on a 288 to more modern "ball bearing" turbo's of the same size. I wouldn't however, hotrod the motor, change the wheels and brakes etc etc.

I wouldn't go hanging a hair dryer on a 360 either; but wouldn't look down on someone who chose to do so. His car and his money.

    I hope it's a non-cat model Gil.

Yes, you have a point, and because of that passion, I'd be happy to forsake certain things in the future in order to fund it. On Tuesday, I went for a drive in the XR8 through Yarra Glen, Healesville, Kinglake and then back through St Andrews. Tight, winding challenging roads. All up, I covered nearly 200 kilometres. Scared the sh*t out of myself once or twice. Simply the best three hours of my life!

Great to hear you're driving the F40. It would be a shame to have it sitting in the garage, not being used for months and months on end.

GV wouldn't advise Gil to use fuel that would damage the Cats

Actually, I think there are some types of AVGAS that are unleaded. The term "AVGAS" is too vague.

But anyway, even if it was a cat car, you can just take the cats out.

Personally, I think home brews are a bit risky (There are lots of stories about karts and bikes with seized engines to insert here), But I'd do it in my 1990 Charade for a laugh, but I'd rather use a specially developed and extensively tested fuel such as Elf TurboMax in my F40... if I had one....

But I'd have already tried it in my 288 by then, so I'd know it worked......:D

Yep, I won't be a struggling student forever! Right now the XR8 makes sense. Ferrari time will come.

The car starts first time and runs really smooth and seems to like the mix. I could use only avgas, but I thought the octane might be a bit high for continued use, so I chuck in a half and half. If the car's happy, then I'm happy.

You serious? Wow, I would definitely have had a good look at such a car if it is as you described. Two points though: would it have been avaliable to 'me' at that price, and I suppose, if you don't know, then you don't 'know'.

    I find this rather intriguing.

I actually owned half of one, with my ex-business partner and we finally sold it for $35000 to John Cant in Qld. ?(I never drove it, I thought my 308GTS was a much better car (same engine though)

FWIW the refinery in WA makes about 3x as much unleaded avgas as leaded, so you are right, such a thing does exist :)

A couple of points Roman, the car wouldn't have been available to you at Phil's price (correct Phil?). Phil has to pay the rent etc, etc.
Buying it is one thing, being able to afford to RUN the thing is another matter entirely. I think you would also find insurance a real drama.
A cheap Ferrari doesn't stay cheap for long! Don't be suckered into a money pit, keep saving and buy a decent car down the track. Be happy with rides in other peoples cars while you are a student.

true, turning a pig into a car is nigh on impossible, however turning a good car into a great car is just a little bit of money. and having a great car from the start is just bliss.
