In the mid 50s, Ferrari produced a couple of sports racers with straight-6 engines of 3.7 and 4.4 liter displacement.

The cars were called the 118 LM and 121 LM, and I cannot figure out where they got those numbers, as they do not seem to conform to the usual numbering schemes that Ferrari has used.

If the one-cylinder scheme had been used, they would have been the 616 and 733 (or numbers like that); if the whole-engine scheme had been used (which it apparently was, briefly), they would have been the 376 and 446.

The only thing I can think of is that these were "project" numbers like the contemporary 553 and 555 Grand Prix cars, and the much more recent 639 thru 643 GP cars. Can anyone confirm that, or come up with an alternate answer?

Like you have the tipo 128 for the 250 engine or tipo 131 for the 500 TR, 118 and 121 were just "project numbers", given in order of appearance.
